<description>Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this pediatric neuropathology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy discusses Febrile Seizures, focusing on their pathophysiology, clinical features, risk factors, and management strategies. This lecture helps you differentiate febrile seizures from more serious neurologic conditions while giving you the tools to approach them with confidence in both exam and clinical settings. We begin by reviewing what defines a febrile seizure—an age-dependent seizure associated with fever in children between 6 months and 5 years of age, without evidence of CNS infection or underlying neurologic disease. The lecture distinguishes between simple febrile seizures, which are generalized, brief, and non-recurrent within 24 hours, and complex febrile seizures, which may be focal, prolonged, or recur during the same febrile illness. You’ll learn about the common triggers, including viral infections and post-vaccination fevers, as well as genetic and environmental risk factors. The lecture walks through the clinical approach to a child presenting with a seizure and fever, including when to consider neuroimaging, lumbar puncture, or hospitalization. We also discuss prognosis, recurrence risk, and the rare progression to epilepsy. Enjoy the lecture and support us below!
