So we've all seen the tragic news reports of the full-auto mishap that took place with a young girl in Arizona. A lot went wrong in that situation... simply put, this was "too much gun" for someone who was not experienced enough with that caliber and firearm platform, also, the cyclic rate of fire for something like a micro Uzi is exceedingly high. if you are starting someone out on an automatic firearm, consider burst fire or something with a longer barrel and heavier action to allow for slower rate of fire. (for reference, I'd estimate from the sound of the reports that this long-barrel M16 seen here was firing around 750 to 800 rounds per minute. a micro Uzi can push 950 rounds per minute.), the instructor was not properly positioned, both in relation to the firearm and also to the shooter., This video was shot at the conclusion of the DEF CON Shoot in order to show safe handling of a fully-automatic firearm. Notice the position of my body and the manner in which I hold both the rear grip as well as the forend. Also, this was an experimental M16 build that was being torture tested out in the Nevada heat and sand. It had been run hard all weekend and we started to experience malfunctions (mostly failures to extract and one failure to fire) but virtually nothing in this video is unsafe. Safe, level shooting and clearing malfunctions is something that everyone should be able to do with any firearm they are handling... or else they should be given adequate and comprehensive assistance. My heart goes out to the family of Charles Vacca, and we could all just as easily have made a mistake like that if our haste to expose a new and enthusiastic shooter to something fun makes us forget certain rules of safety on the range. Be safe, be responsible, and have fun out there!
