<description>Using the smell of the exhaust on a vehicle that has a constant misfire can be a good indicator of direction. If the exhaust has a clean smell to it, then there is a good chance the misfire condition is being caused by an injector that is not opening. However there are variables to this test. Some systems will shut down a fuel injector in the presence of an ignition or compression misfire which will lead to a clean smelling exhaust. Use this test as a guide only and not a foolproof test. Here is a video that EricTheCarGuy and I did where I chose to start our troubleshooting process by monitoring tailpipe emissions. ETCG and ScannerDanner Solve A Misfire (Part 1) https://youtu.be/4yvg6uW8bRE, EricTheCarGuy and ScannerDanner Solve A Misfire (Part 2) https://youtu.be/DylOq484Tws, Engine Performance Diagnostics chapter 1 page 13 Topics covered misfire identification using tailpipe gases, what are Hydrocarbon emissions, no fuel misfire compared to a lean misfire, Tools used 5 gas analyzer, Playlist (Chapter 1) Misfire ID, Compression Tests, Vacuum Leaks, Fuel Trim, Head Gasket, Restricted Exhaust, Low Power, DMM https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5E3AEC36DB838BB1, Related videos Chevy 4.8 Oxygen Sensor Test (fixed rich signal P0172, P0175) https://youtu.be/H6lY42u19VM, O2 sensor testing (fixed rich), low power, misfire (Mitsubishi Eclipse) https://youtu.be/ClCuoi3JxEI, Stuck Open Fuel Injector (how to fix) https://youtu.be/jsl531-6q-A, For more information on this topic, I have written a “field manual” called Engine Performance Diagnostics which is available at www.scannerdanner.com as an eBook or paper book. Want even more diagnostic training? Whether you are a DIY trying to fix your own car, someone looking to become an auto technician, or a current auto technician that wants to get more into diagnostics, subscribe to ScannerDanner Premium https://www.scannerdanner.com/join-scannerdanner-premium.html There is a 14 day free trial. On ScannerDanner Premium I will bring you right into my classroom at Rosedale Technical College. You will find page for page lectures taken right from my book as well as exclusive classroom type case studies. What is so special about these classroom case studies? I pull live problem vehicles directly into my classroom and we troubleshoot them in real time, using and applying the theory and testing procedures we learn during the classroom lectures. There is no better on-line training of how to troubleshoot automotive electrical and electronics systems anywhere!
