<description>Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy continues our Metabolic Map series by exploring the complex network of Lipid Metabolism, highlighting how fatty acids and triglycerides are synthesized, stored, transported, and broken down based on physiologic demand. This big-picture overview helps you link together key pathways you’ve already studied and understand how lipid metabolism interfaces with carbohydrate and protein metabolism. We begin by reviewing fatty acid synthesis from acetyl-CoA in the fed state and how these fatty acids are esterified into triglycerides for storage or VLDL export. From there, we move into lipolysis, the mobilization of stored fat from adipose tissue, followed by the transport and mitochondrial β-oxidation of free fatty acids for ATP production. You’ll also see how lipid-derived acetyl-CoA contributes to ketone body formation during prolonged fasting or carbohydrate restriction.
