For me, the only watercraft appropriate for such an occasion is my canvas and wood Prospector canoe, and what a joy it was. With no travel plans, no long distance destination in mind, I was free to just paddle and play. We had just a few hours of free time on Sunday - restless teenagers at home and other obligations interfered with what I could easily have turned into an overnight trip. Choosing a destination was unimportant. All that mattered was relative peace and quiet, flat water to play on and a convenient place to enjoy a hot lunch prepared over an open fire. This was the first trip of the year for my Prospector, sidelined this spring by my new Swift Keewaydin 14 solo canoe. It was such a pleasure to paddle that I immediately regretted not taking it our on more trips this season. I won't make that mistake again next year. Alone on the lake, I couldn't help but simply play, paddling in circles, practicing strokes and getting lost in the sky and trees reflecting off the calm surface of the water. Lunch was memorable. Pulled pork and rice, French baguette, fine cheese anda quality Malbec wine from Argentina, enjoyed by the fire with a beautiful woman - what else could a man want?
