Runner beans, Phaseolus coccineus, are a wonder food. Throughout the second half of summer and into early autumn, they produce an abundance of green pods , when well watered. I show also how you can grow runner the plants for dry beans, to store and eat later. You’ll see sowing timings, planting methods, spacing, watering, and how to decide whether to harvest early green pods, or leave pods to mature fully on the plant. When you leave the pods to dry, the seeds inside them are both delicious and nutritious - high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Be sure to boil them for a minimum 10 minutes. The flavour of these Czar beans is quite wondrous. 🎥 Filmed May to August 2025 by Carly Dutton-Edwards In Homeacres No Dig Garden, Somerset, UK 🎵 Music: Rory Dunwoodie, @rorydinwoodiemusic IG: rorydinwoodiemusic You can join this channel by paying a monthly fee, to support our work with helping gardeners grow better, and to receive monthly videos made only for members: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCB1J6siDdmhwah7q0O2WJBg/join #runnerbeans #growyourownfood #nodiggardening #vegetablegardening #homegrownfood 00:00 Introduction 01:14 Two methods for harvesting 01:30 Plants killed by frost, need for warmth 02:15 Recommended sowing date 02:57 Potential pests 03:24 Use of canes and structures 04:10 23rd May - one week since transplanting 05:11 Teepee of sticks, spacing of plants 05:39 Comparison of seedlings in tray with ones planted a week previously 06:02 Transplanting into dibbed holes, depth of planting 07:45 Plants sending out stems to grow around canes 08:31 Watering 09:13 18th July - warm weather, watering method 09:46 Beans starting to appear, options for harvest 12:01 Teepees and spacing 12:23 No dig pathways, benefit of open-sided beds 13:06 Flowers on plants and removing lateral stems 14:13 Mid-August - maturity of beans 15:09 Harvesting dry beans and saving seed 17:42 Watering 18:47 Removing flowers, pruning excess growth
