Whether in the control group, the biochar group, or the rock dust group, the kale and collards are thriving. The fact that all the plants are doing well with or without additional amendments, gives me more confidence that the foundation of compost and castings is a good one to build a garden on. But the field trials aren't about our homemade compost and castings. They're about trying to determine if the addition of rock dust or biochar will provide benefits beyond those provided by the compost and castings. Will biochar and rock dust produce greater yields? Will veggies grown in rock dust taste better than those grown without rock dust? And will crops grown in rock dust have a higher brix reading? OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used.
