        <description>A demonstration of a simple (but good) AM receiver for 160 metres.  The set tunes roughly 1200 - 1900 kHz. Signals heard include AM broadcast stations and 160 metre AM activity on the morning net (including the VK100WIA special event station). It uses 3 ICs - NE602 mixer/local oscillator, MK484 455kHz AM detector and LM386 audio amplifier and comfortably powers a speaker on weak and strong signals. On its own the MK484 is a mediocre TRF AM receiver with poor selectivity. However it performs well as an IF amplifier and detector with some useful AGC action. The circuit is almost the same as 'Radio Projects for the Amateur' Volume 4 by Drew Diamond VK3XU (book available from WIA www.wia.org.au).
