Local industries went offshore or closed down while consumers got more choice and lower prices. Local distributors of imported goods survived for a while but increasingly had their margins undercut by retailers directly importing from overseas. Dick Smith was an early beneficiary and made this fact known to customers through his 'cut out the middleman' campaigns. Again the result was lower supplier margins and lower prices for consumers.
