The route from Ouray up the Alpine Loop (Engineer Pass Road, CR 18) to Engineer Pass is a popular one. I checked it out a week or so ago and made it to within 100 yards of the sign at the top. My trip, on a dirt bike (motorcycle) took around 45 minutes, and that's for only a very few miles. It was mostly a first gear ride. The road is rough and rocky. A Jeep could do it in maybe two to three hours, maybe more. It's not for the faint of heart. I took video with my helmet cam and speeded it up so the whole ascent is a bit over four minutes. Hold onto your hat!
