LIMP MODE After Oil Change?? ('16 Mazda CX5: P0012 - ELECTRIC VVT!)

Owner LIMPED his poor Mazda CX5 to PHAD for a diagnosis. He says 6 days after a Wal-Mart oil change, the car suddenly lost power and turned on the Check Engine Light. "P0012 - Intake Camshaft Over-Retarded" is stored in the ECM. This Mazda SKYACTIV Engine uses a high-tech ELECTRIC VVT Actuator 3-Phase motor to advance the Intake Camshaft. Apparently the VVT system is BROKEN, and the Intake Cam is STUCK RETARDED. Let's do some research on this fancy ELECTRIC VVT system, and tear into the engine to see why this camshaft can't phase properly. Hopefully no parts will be required...because they are EXPENSIVE!!
