We then examine the two main components of the vestibulospinal system. The lateral vestibulospinal tract descends ipsilaterally through the spinal cord to influence extensor muscles of the trunk and proximal limbs, playing a significant role in upright posture and balance. In contrast, the medial vestibulospinal tract projects bilaterally to cervical and upper thoracic spinal cord segments, coordinating head and neck movements in response to changes in body position. The lecture details their anatomic pathways, synaptic targets in the ventral horn, and their relationship to other descending tracts for integrated motor control.
