I take a walk around a 40' x 20' garden bed and list all the plants that can be grown in a very small space that is in partial shade and in poorly drained soil. Partial list of cast of characters in such a small space.. In no particular order 'Rovada' Red Currant 'Blanka' White Currant 'Ben Serek' Black currant 'Wyldewood' Elderberry Victoria Rhubarb Albino Black Cap Raspberry 'Jewell' Black Cap Raspberry 'Triple Crown' Thornless Blackberry 'Polka' Raspberry 'Korso' Elderberry 'Profusion' Sorrel Orange Scented Mint 'Lekora' Sea buckthorn 'Briana Apricot' 6+ varieties of Honeyberry or Haskap Marshmallow Sweet Cicely Stinging Nettles Sea Kale Native Bee Balm Asparagus (purple passion and seedlings) Turkish Rocket Antonovka Apple Renet Zabrigau Apple Tulip Tree Carpathian Walnut Wshew, thats enough. I get that not all of these can be here for the long haul. Over the years and decades the list will simplify and will become more tree and shrub dominant, but this is Edible Forest Garden design. You pack it in and let succession and your observations direct from there. Its a changing and shifting mosaic.
