<description>While discussing drywall, designer Camille Dettmore and a homeowner talk about when it’s time to hire, and when you can DIY. When our homeowner, Hannah, asked designer Camille Dettmore if drywall was a DIY project, Camille had some excellent tips that apply to any aspect of a renovation. Things to Consider When Hiring or DIYing When you’re deciding whether to hire or DIY, consider the following: Your comfort level: If it’s a skill that you’re confident and comfortable with, DIYing can be a great way to save money on the overall cost of the project. Cost considerations: Compare how much it costs to hire someone, but also how much it will cost if you do it. If the difference between the two isn’t significant, it’s usually best to hire it out. Tools and experience: If you’ll need to purchase specialized tools or equipment for a job, consider if it’s worth it. Also, if you’re not experienced, you may waste time and materials, making the project more expensive. Your time: How much is your time worth? If you need to take time off of work or away from your family, consider whether it’s worth more than how much you’d be paying the contractor. If you want to get your hands dirty: At the end of the day, it’s your home and if you want to take on a project to feel like you’re part of the renovation, you have that right. While you might not save as much money as you’d hoped, knowing you did something yourself can be worth the satisfaction in the long run. If you’ve considered these points and DIYing still feels like the route to go, Camille suggests doing plenty of research on the project and practicing beforehand. Then, if it’s something that seems worth it and gets you excited, DIY away. Looking for more step by step guidance on how to complete projects around the house?
