<description>Describing and testing a BITX40 7 MHz SSB transceiver that largely copies the famous design by Ashhar Farhan VU2ESE. I'm out portable on a hot afternoon, make several contacts and answering questions from visitors. A highlight was that at one point there were four stations with homebrew transceivers on the air at once (VK2ABN, VK2ABT, VK3ZZ &amp; VK3YE). The circuitry of my rig is mostly identical to the original at http://www.phonestack.com/farhan/ However I used 9.045 MHz crystals for the IF and a VFO around 2 MHz to cover the 40 metre band. The microphone amplifier, driver and PA are also slightly different. Thousands of BITX transceivers on various bands are on air around the world. There are numerous BITX videos, websites and a specialist yahoo group. Mine was built from scratch, but kits and circuit boards are also available - just google 'Bitx transceiver' will bring up all the major links.
