In the UK we are supposed to have a license if we watch traditional TV channels. But as everyone moves away to more intelligent platforms like YouTube with its masses of good edutainment, less and less people are requiring a licence. The company tasked with collecting licence money (Capita) assumes that EVERYONE should have a licence and aggressively pursues anyone without one in an effort to intimidate them into paying for one they may not require. As many people use a TV to watch YouTube these days, it's extremely deceiving to imply that you require a TV licence to watch YouTube. I've just checked with Google and deceiving someone into paying for a licence they don't need is firmly categorised as fraud. There are currently over 115 million YouTube channels that you do NOT require a licence to view. When I or any other independent YouTuber live streams, that is also free to view without a licence. I've had people tell me that they would love to view my live streams on YouTube and Twitch, but can't because they don't have a licence. So Capita's wording is definitely misleading people. The only "YouTube" channels you might need a licence for are ones that actively live stream terrestrial TV channels. I couldn't identify any of those as I simply don't watch their outdated style of content. Hopefully Google will not do a "deal" with Capita, but if they do then hopefully they will have a settings checkbox to block all Capita related content. If you genuinely do not need a licence and are being harassed by Capita, I strongly recommend that you archive all the threatening letters they send you, as they may be useful in the future.
