https://stream.echo6.co/videos/watch/5bd41ffe-34e8-47f9-8514-1a0814ccb0e9 In this video, I take a look at Automatic Identification System (AIS) using the AIS-Simulator (https://github.com/Mictronics/ais-simulator) and its GR-AIS_Simulator methods in GNU Radio to transmit OTA AIS messages. For demonstration purposes, I’m using a HackRF in a controlled lab environment to ensure no unintended signals escape outside the experiment setup. AIS is a maritime communication system used by vessels to broadcast their position, speed, and other critical data, helping with navigation and safety. During this demonstration, I showcase how AIS messages are generated and transmitted, emphasizing the importance of keeping these experiments within safe and legal boundaries. To demodulate and decode these AIS messages, I use AIS-Catcher (https://github.com/jvde-github/AIS-catcher) with an RTL-SDR. AIS-Catcher is a feature-rich tool that decodes AIS messages and visualizes the results on a map, providing comprehensive statistics and insights into vessel traffic. I also discuss potential future explorations, like using AISCOT to convert decoded AIS messages from AIS-Catcher into Cursor on Target (CoT) format for sending to a TAK server.
