        <title>"Beach 40" 7MHz DSB txcvr: Pt 1 circuit walkthrough</title>

<description>With its all-discrete design using just eight common transistors, the "Beach 40" must be about the simplest practical HF voice transceiver possible. It transmits 2 watts of double sideband suppressed carrier on 7 MHz and has its own direct conversion receiver strong enough to drive low impedence earphones. It's made 3000km contacts, though up to 1000km is more common. Apart from the usual look inside and on air demo, this video features a detailed walk through the transceiver circuit, describing each stage. Grab pen and paper while watching to draw your own copy. A constructional article on the Beach 40 appeared in Lo-Key September 2013 (Issue 119), published by the VK QRP Club. Please add a 47uF electrolytic capacitor in series with a 22 ohm resistor between Pin 1 of the LM386 and earth on the circuit (page 19). PS: For those enquiring about the relay, one side of the coil goes to the +12v (always on) while the other side is shorted to earth by the PTT. It's a DPDT type - one section for the antenna (between final PA and junction of 10 turn coil &amp; 100n capacitor in rx prod detector) and the other for the power (between Tx and Rx stages). PPS: Be sure to watch Parts 2 and 3 for an improved audio amplifier and use of a crystal wide swing VXO.
