Testing a new QRP double sideband transceiver on 40 metres (or does RF attract Mr Whippy?)

Trying out a new 80 & 40m QRP DSB transceiver from local beaches on Port Phillip Bay over the last week. This rig is very similar to the 7 MHz DSB unit of previous videos except for a little more power and coverage of 80m. Also I use a variable capacitor instead of a variable resistor/diodes for better frequency stability and tuning range. As an experiment I tried 10m of wire vertical with a single 10m radial on 40m. On air results were very poor and there were no replies to calls. However during this time Mr Whippy came, sold nothing and left. Changing to the usual end-fed 1/2 wavelength (but still keeping the 10m radial) made a huge difference, with several successful contacts (but no return of Mr Whippy)! A vertical might be better though for the small minority of 40m QRP contacts that are either local groundwave or long distance DX. My feeling though is that on 40m verticals are more trouble than they are worth, especially in a public area where radials can be tripped over.
