This design by This Old House contributor Christopher Beidel, owner of Pernt, a handmade-furniture company, in Brooklyn, New York, has the added benefit of being relatively easy to build. Nearly all the cuts can be made with a miter saw and a circular saw. And pressure-treated lumber makes the project sturdy and capable of standing up to the elements for many years. SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse Shopping List for How to Build a Decorative Driveway Marker: 1x3 for the balusters Get four 6-footers., 6x6 post Get one at least 3 feet long., 4x4 post Get one at least 3 feet long., 1x4 for the rails Get two 8-footers.1_-inch deck screws, _-inch threaded galvanized-steel rod, primer and paint, Tools for How to Build a Decorative Driveway Marker: miter Saw, combination square, straightedge, rafter square, clamps, circular saw, handsaw, drill/driver, _-inch Spade Bit, hammer, chisel, mallet, paintbrush, CUT LIST Center Post: Pressure-treated or cedar 6x6: one @ 28 inches End Posts: Pressure-treated or cedar 4x4: two @ 16 inches Bottom Rails: Pressure-treated or cedar 1x4: one @ 37 3/4 inches; one @ 37 inches to butt into the first rail Top Rails: Pressure-treated or cedar 1x4: two @ 48 inches. Cut an 8-footer in half; once installed, flush-cut the tails to length. Balusters: Pressure-treated or cedar 1x3: eight @ 20 1/2 inches and eight @ 15 inches Rod: 1/2-inch galvanized-steel rod: one @ 18 inches CENTER-POST LAYOUT Decorative Notch:Starting from the top of the post, make a horizontal line all around the post at these intervals: 1 inch, 3 inches, 4 inches, 5 ½ inches, and 6 1/2 inches. Vertical Notch:1 1/2 x 1 1/2 x 20 inches Measure and mark a cutline 1 1/2 inches into the two faces of one corner, extending 20 inches from the bottom edge of the post. TIP: If you need to level the marker, use rods on all three posts. Thread a nut and a washer onto the rods, and turn the nuts to adjust the height of the posts.
