<description>http://www.edibleacres.org Wanted to share an update here on our chickens. We recently got a beautiful new rooster, he seems to be an incredibly good fit for our flock. We're also dealing with a handful of the hens seeming to be under the weather. Some wet sneezing, some wheezing, one or two dealing with perhaps 'vent gleet'. Almost entirely it is coming from the hens we got from a bad situation back in October. We're focusing on providing even more nourishment and increasing their protein to see if that helps. Some articles and discussions I've explored to understand soy as an option for hens is here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/feeding-chickens-soybeans.267101/ http://www.thepoultrysite.com/articles/194/whole-soybeans-in-diets-for-poultry/ http://articles.extension.org/pages/67352/feeding-soybean-to-poultry We are exploring this because we have 100 plus pounds of local, non-GMO, certified organic soybeans to work with and I'd like to see if they can be a helpful addition to their diet. We'll see and share notes as we go... Certainly not looking to go into some all soy diet by any means, just seeing if it can be helpful in boosting their protein needs in this scenario. If you have suggestions of ways to boost health of the flock, we'd love to hear it! http://www.edibleacres.org/ - our permaculture nursery in NYS Edible Acres is a full service permaculture nursery located in the Finger Lakes area of NY state.
