You will learn how these neural networks integrate sensory, motor, and interneurons to coordinate complex reflexes independently of the central nervous system while communicating with it via sympathetic and parasympathetic inputs. We then discuss the functional significance of the ENS in regulating peristalsis, segmentation, secretion of digestive enzymes, and modulation of local blood supply. This includes how sensory neurons detect chemical and mechanical changes in the gut lumen, and how the ENS processes this input to generate precise motor patterns for digestion.
