<description>Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this respiratory physiology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy explains the roles of partial pressures and gas solubilities in external respiration, based on fundamental gas laws, and how oxygen and carbon dioxide move across the respiratory membrane. We begin by reviewing Dalton’s Law, which states that each gas in a mixture exerts its own partial pressure, and how this drives gas diffusion across the alveolar-capillary interface. You’ll learn how differences in partial pressure gradients between the alveoli and pulmonary capillary blood are the key force behind oxygen uptake and carbon dioxide elimination. The lecture also explores Henry’s Law, which relates gas solubility to the amount of gas that dissolves in a liquid at a given partial pressure. We compare the solubility of oxygen and carbon dioxide in blood and explain why CO₂ diffuses more readily despite having a smaller pressure gradient.
