<description>Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this molecular biology lecture, Professor Zach Murphy breaks down the complex process of Translation, guiding you through how cells convert mRNA into functional proteins—a central step in gene expression and cellular function. We begin with an overview of the major components required for protein synthesis, including mRNA, ribosomes, tRNAs, and aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases. The lecture then walks through each stage of translation: initiation, elongation, and termination. During initiation, you’ll learn how the small ribosomal subunit binds to the mRNA’s 5’ end (with the Shine-Dalgarno sequence in prokaryotes or the 5’ cap in eukaryotes), how the start codon (AUG) is recognized, and how the large subunit assembles to form a complete ribosome. In the elongation phase, we cover codon recognition, peptide bond formation by peptidyl transferase, and translocation of the ribosome along the mRNA strand. We explain how each new amino acid is added to the growing polypeptide chain in a precise, stepwise fashion. Termination is triggered by stop codons, where release factors promote dissociation of the ribosome and release of the synthesized protein. We also highlight important differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic translation and discuss clinical correlations such as antibiotics that target bacterial ribosomes.
