<description>We've been extending our growing season with unheated cold frames and hoop houses for the last 5 winters here in the Chicago area. This is always a challenge, but this winter proved to be the most challenging so far. Though we didn't see temperatures below 0 degrees Fahrenheit the prior 2 winters, this winter they were commonplace and it got as cold as -20 degrees Fahrenheit. We also had our fair share of snow. So, today I thought I'd show you what's left of the winter garden after a very harsh winter and many harvests. And while I'm at it, I'll also pick my lunch. OYR is all about growing a lot of food on a little land using sustainable organic methods, while keeping costs and labor at a minimum. Emphasis is placed on improving soil quality with compost, mulch, and compost tea. No store-bought fertilizers, soil amendments, pesticides, compost activators, etc. are used.
