In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy presents the rubrospinal tract, an important descending motor pathway originating from the red nucleus in the midbrain. We begin by exploring the inputs to the red nucleus, including the motor cortex and cerebellum, which allow this tract to integrate voluntary motor commands with ongoing motor coordination and reflexive adjustments. From there, we trace the pathway as it decussates almost immediately in the ventral tegmental decussation and descends contralaterally through the lateral funiculus of the spinal cord. The rubrospinal tract primarily terminates in the cervical spinal cord, influencing interneurons and motor neurons that control upper limb flexor muscles. Its excitatory effect on flexors and inhibitory influence on extensors helps refine precise, skilled movements, particularly in the upper extremities. We also discuss the functional role of the rubrospinal tract in humans, where it is less dominant than in other species but still contributes to fine motor control, posture, and recovery of movement after corticospinal tract injury.
