Day 1 of my solo canoe trip took me through Lemon Lake, Algonquin Park. http://myselfreliance.com/lemon-lake-algonquin-park/ At first glance, the only redeeming quality of tiny Lemon Lake is that it sits between two nice destination lakes, McGarvey to the west and North Grace to the east. After completing the moderate 810m portage, I’m greeted by a muddy landing that shows how low the water level is, and views to the east are uninspiring. Like many of the lakes along my route, this one is better suited for wildlife than campers. A short 400m paddle across the Lake brings me to the 165m portage to North Grace Lake. Here I pause, for the rocky, narrow bay harbouring the portage and an outlet creek that flows to North Grace has a zen quality about it that is difficult to put into words. I sit and eat a small snack before carrying on. Looking back across the lake, I have a desire to spend more time here in the future, perhaps camping on North Grace and revisiting Lemon Lake early in the morning to see what wildlife inhabit it during feeding hours.
