I still recommend the more efficient modes of DSB, SSB or CW for portable operating but AM can be great fun as well. Here I'm testing a 3 or 4 watt portable transceiver on 40 metres. It operates on 7125 kHz, using a 7122 kHz crystal that has been pulled up. The rig started its life on 160 metres but was moved up to 40 metres due to its higher activity, longer range and more efficient antennas. The transmitter is similar to the 'Grenade' sometimes used by broadcast pirates. Three ICs are in the receiver which is a single conversion superhet. The video shows the rig in contact with stations up to 500km away. A 2022 demonstration of this rig can be viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSUG2vciJYA PS: If you liked this video please consider supporting Amateur Radio VK3YE by: Subscribing on YouTube,, Checking my books page at https://books.vk3ye.com, Shopping on Amazon via: https://amzn.to/3iiDQXv, or, Shopping on eBay via: https://ebay.us/i9DuWP (then if you buy something I'll get a small commission at no cost to you)
