Magnetic loops for HF pedestrian mobile - Part 3

More loop testing, this time during a 6km walk along the beach, again on 40 and 10 metres. There's a stop half way to explain how the loop works (including a chat to an interested onlooker - not filmed). More than usual stations were out portable due to it being the WIA Field Day. Solid contacts out to 300km were made on 40 metres. An excursion to 10 metres also proved worthwhile, with the highlight being a 5 x 1 contact with ZS3Y (South Africa). Some will ask for plans and dimensions but the name of the game is experimentation - suck it and see. 3 metres of extension cable for the main loop and a variable capacitor tuning up to about 200pF will comfortably cover 40 and 20 metres. If you don't have a big variable capacitor try an air spaced trimmer like I did - that will at least do the higher HF bands, with a capacitor switched in for 40 metres. The loop is described fully in the WIA's 'Amateur Radio' magazine, July 2012 pages 34 - 37. You can tell it's working by hearing the sharp noise peak on the receiver - demonstrated in a previous video. And don't forget G4FON's website and many more to see how others do it!
