Converting a kids toy walkie talkie from 27 MHz AM to 28 MHz AM amateur use. Useful for testing radios you're about to buy secondhand, QRP experiments, antenna tests, etc. This video only applies if your AM walkie talkie has one crystal for the transmitter and a free-running superregenerative receiver. It is unsuitable if your walkie talkie has two crystals for each channel (1 x transmit, 1 x receive) or no crystals at all. If the former you'll need 2 crystals which makes the project expensive and probably not worthwhile (unless you can get some old 27 MHz marine receive crystals which were around 28.355 MHz and thus suitable for a 10m AM transmitter). Range is up to a couple of hundred metres though it may be more if you attach a better antenna or have a clear path. The cheap 28.636 MHz crystal came from www.rockby.com.au . If you wish to build your own version rather than modify, see G3XBM's website or circuits on talkingelectronics.com PS: If you liked this video please consider supporting Amateur Radio VK3YE by: Subscribing on YouTube,, Checking my books page at https://books.vk3ye.com to see if any appeal,, Shopping on Amazon via: https://amzn.to/3iiDQXv , or, Shopping on eBay via: https://ebay.us/i9DuWP (then if you buy something I'll get a small commission at no cost to you)
