<description>Elecampane - Inula helenium - is a large perennial plant in the compositae family that is native to Europe but has naturalized North America. It likes to get is feet wet and so prefers moist fertile soil. The roots contain the most active medicine and our best harvested in the early spring or the fall after the flower is going to seed in the foliage is starting to die back. Elecampane is considered a Lung Tonic and is specific for an old lingering infection in the pulmonary system, the onset of bronchitis, cough reflex and bringing out the clumps of mucus. Also for a deep bronchial infection that is turned to asthma, and some types of animal allergies. It has been used for hoarseness in the throat, extreme pain bronchitis, chronic cough, sinus infections, shallow breathing, asthma and shortness of breath. It is also mildly stimulating digestion and bile flow. Elecampane can be used to rekindle the internal fire and drive waste products and pathogens to the surface. It is considered an Expectorant, facilitating expulsion of mucus or phlegm from the lungs and throat. Helpful for decongesting stagnant fluids in the body. The roots are highly anti bacterial and antiseptic. Great for infections that will not yield to treatment. Acting on the lymph tissue's and swollen throat and swollen glands. Elecampane contains up to 44% Inulin, a starch that does not trigger insulin production but instead provides blood sugar to the muscles and extremities. Inulin is also nutritious and rebuilding to old worn-out exhausted tissues and poor nutrition. The flavour is acrid, bitter, pungent and floral all at the same time. Making it an interesting taste that many of us are not used to but our body will recognize as a tonic. Elecampane is also known as "Elf wort" in some of the old folklore, meaning that is is good for Elves or healing magical wounds from the arrow of an elf. Also some of the literature suggests that Elves liked to live under this plant. So if you are looking to bring in some elven magic into your life or protect yourself from magical influences this may be the right herb for you. Herbal Blessings..
