Homebrew receivers also generally have no phase locked loop synthesiser so introduced phase noise is low. Commercial equipment boasts features like narrow crystal filters, IF shifts, passband tuning and digital signal processing to help readability in the face of interference. While undoubtedly handy for the DXer they are not so useful when signals are strong and pleasant listening becomes the priority. While SSB signals are generally still within the 3kHz bandwidth permitted by the transmitter's crystal filter, there can be wide variations in transmission quality. A quality transmission requires a good receiver to appreciate fully and the difference compared to average or poor transmissions can be amazing.
