<description>Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy will guide you through the physiology of gastrointestinal motility, focusing on the esophagus and stomach. We begin with the esophagus, discussing the coordinated sequence of swallowing, primary and secondary peristalsis, and the role of the upper and lower esophageal sphincters in regulating the passage of food while preventing reflux. The lecture highlights how the enteric nervous system and autonomic inputs coordinate these processes, ensuring efficient transport from the pharynx to the stomach. We then transition to the stomach, exploring the mechanisms behind receptive relaxation of the fundus, mixing and churning in the body and antrum, and the regulation of gastric emptying into the duodenum. Special attention is given to the roles of smooth muscle contractions, the interstitial cells of Cajal as pacemakers, and neurohormonal signals such as gastrin, CCK, and vagal stimulation.
