<description>SSB gear doesn't have to be hard to build. Described is an ultra-simple 7 MHz SSB transceiver that uses commonly available parts such as BC548 &amp; BD139 transistors, LM386 IC, TV ferrites and off the shelf crystals. It is direct conversion yet true SSB; this is achieved with a filter made from cheap 7159 kHz crystals. It is a cross between the famous BitX and Beach 40 designs. But unlike the two it operates on a single frequency only (7160 kHz LSB). It's a 'take it or leave it' radio; you must accept a given frequency, volume and RF gain or switch it off; there is no other state. The single frequency has been found to be less of a disadvantage than expected - the radio's 2 watts is punchy enough to be heard far and wide and attract good responses to CQ calls. The contacts recorded were all made in one day's in and out casual operating. 7160 kHz (generated by 7159 kHz crystals) has proved an excellent frequency. It is neither overcrowded nor too far out of the way for people to tune. I suggest VK builders stick to this for compatibility if building a rig for 40 metres. However others may care to try other common crystal frequencies, eg 3579, 3686, 7200 or 14318 kHz.
