<description>Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy will explore the inner ear's intricate anatomy, focusing on its bony and membranous labyrinths. We begin by examining the cochlea, breaking down its structural components such as the scala vestibuli, scala media, and scala tympani, along with the organ of Corti and its role in converting mechanical vibrations into neural signals. Special attention is given to the basilar membrane’s tonotopic organization and how it contributes to frequency discrimination in hearing. We then move into the vestibular apparatus, which includes the semicircular canals, utricle, and saccule. The lecture details how the semicircular canals detect angular acceleration through the crista ampullaris, while the utricle and saccule detect linear acceleration and head position via the maculae. The importance of endolymph and perilymph in transmitting and modulating these signals is also discussed, linking structural design to functional precision. Finally, we connect the auditory and vestibular components through the vestibulocochlear nerve (CN VIII), highlighting how both sensory systems work in tandem for balance, spatial orientation, and hearing.
