How Much Do Plumbers Really Make in 2026? (Real Numbers From Apprentice to Owner)

No, plumbers don’t all make $40,000 a year. And no, we’re not all millionaires either.

In this video, I break down the real numbers for plumbing income in 2026 — from first-year apprentice all the way to master plumber and business owner.

I’m Roger Wakefield, and I’ve been in the plumbing industry for over 45 years. I’ve worked my way up through the union, run a plumbing company, hired and trained plumbers at every level, and mentored tradespeople across the country. After my last video about becoming a plumber in 2026, the #1 question was:

“Yeah, but what do plumbers actually make?”

So here’s the breakdown:

🔹 Apprentice Pay (Year 1–4)
• $15–$22/hr in many markets
• $22–$25/hr in larger cities
• Some union apprentices: $40–$50/hr
• $40,000–$50,000+ per year while learning
• No student loan debt

🔹 Tradesman (Texas example)
• $27–$30/hr right out of high school in some cases
• ~$50,000–$60,000 annually

🔹 Journeyman Plumber (Licensed)
• $30–$60/hr depending on location
• High-demand markets can go higher
• Commission-based service plumbers can earn six figures
• Some top performers: $250K–$350K/year

🔹 Master Plumber
• $100K–$150K+ working for a company
• Commercial & industrial masters can earn even more
• Can pull permits and operate independently

🔹 Plumbing Business Owners
• Small, well-run companies: $150K–$250K/year is common
• Large service companies: high six to seven figures possible
• Healthy profit margins: 10–20% (service)

I just changed out the kitchen sink and faucet at my house a couple of months ago and actually went to a larger one. We had a builder grade stainless steel sink, and I love the stainless steel, but I didn't like that it was only you know 6 or 8 inches deep, didn't like the faucet that was with it. I bought a beautiful American Standard sink. It's almost like a commercial kitchen sink and I had to just like everybody else when it comes to things like that I go to put it in it won't fit because the hole on top was perfect.

Plumbing is one thing that…plumbing electrical work is the work you were supposed to have a license to do. The Texas state law and plumbing license board rules state it very clearly you are supposed to be licensed in the state to offer to do plumbing. Somebody recommended me for a job yesterday on Facebook and I went in and looked and see who else was recommended there was another plumber on there that had been recommended four times which is great, there’s enough plumbing in Dallas to keep every one of us busy forever.__________________________________________________________________

I work with some great foundation companies and Williamson Foundation in Rockwall is actually fantastic. I love them because they’ve got a lifetime guarantee.

But I've talked to Roger (owner of Williamson Foundation) and we both agree you should always get the foundation fixed first because you don't want them to come in and cause problems and if you get the plumbing fixed first and they come in to move the house around it, it creates a leak now you're doing this again.

Get the foundation fixed first then let the plumber come in and do what they do and things will be good for you.

Plumbing and slab leaks are a problem. Slab leak detection is a science that not all plumbers can do. How to find a slab leak is very important.

I've got a lady in Plano right now that her slab leak is so bad it's flooding her neighbor's front yard and her house is about 3 feet higher and literally you can look over in their front yard and it looks like a river. We did talk to her, she is turning off the water or only turning it on as she needs it; we went out and did a leak location and determined it was on the hot water side so she had a ball valve on her hot water heater so she was actually able to turn it off when she's not using it. So she’d turn it on to take a shower. That lets the ground drop a little bit and it's given her a little bit of time to figure out exactly what she wants to do and how she wants to go about the repair which way.

How to Check for Gas Leak in House

People work on their own gas lines. With everything going on you know I was watching the news this morning and they were talking about Atmos and gas leaks and I think that they said there's 35,000 feet of pipe that is black steel pipe that Atmos still uses for distribution here in town. This is how to check for gas leak in house.

If you can turn that gas off and isolate that gas leak that can make it safe do that then call a plumber whether it's me or somebody else, plumbers are trained to work on gas leaks. You as a homeowner can do it too. What I recommend if you think you know where the gas leak is so you think you've got a compression fitting or you've got a threaded fitting on a nut or a threaded fitting that's actually leak and you can tighten that nut.

The way a plumber tests, all the Home Inspectors use those sniffers, I don't really lock those because any residual gas that may be on it it's going to detect. We use a very hi-tech tool it's probably one of the most hi-tech tools we use it's a spray bottle with soap soapy water in it and we spray it on the fitting itself and if it makes bubbles there's a leak. That is the best way to look for a gas leak.
