Courgettes can crop for four months or more, from one April sowing under cover.

In this video I show how I start them in rich compost and explain why there’s no rush to sow too early, as they are susceptible to frost. I talk about using fleece for protection against spring’s cold winds — sometimes double layers if needed — in the UK, this is the 30gsm fleece I use https://charlesdowding.co.uk/products/fleece?variant=54252843204931

I share tips on planting distance and watering to keep growth steady. And my favourite variety is Defender F1 https://premierseedsdirect.com/product/courgette-defender-f1-charles/

I explain why I grow F1 varieties, when to remove the very first small fruits to encourage stronger cropping later, and how to harvest so that plants continue producing. We also look at the natural silver-grey colouring on leaves, which is often mistaken for powdery mildew, and how to keep plants productive through many months.

With steady warmth, courgettes crop heavily through summer and into early autumn — often giving one family more than enough from just one or two plants.

In the fourth year of this trial 2016. Two adjacent strips of ground 6.5ft (2m) wide, and 29.5ft (9m) long. Strip one has it's soil loosened with a fork (after originally turning over the pasture January 2013, see thumbnail) then is mulched with 2in/5cm compost each winter. The beds of strip 2 are simply mulched with 2in/5cm compost without any loosening at all. (In 2013 no compost was used.) See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVY4SJt4mzg for descriptions of the compost used. The trial started in 2013 and is ongoing.
There is a third strip mulched with different compost, the subject of film 2 (coming soon), and a third film looks at some effects of not rotating vegetables in this trial and elsewhere in my garden. Filming and editing by my son Edward Dowding https://edowding.net.

Charles demonstrates and explains two methods of clearing weeds to grow vegetables, without digging soil or removing any weeds or soil. Mulches were applied at his Homeacres garden during the past 6-12 months, and you see the results: crops taken, while soil is being cleared of weeds, some of which were vigorous perennials.
The polythene can be any colour, usually black and must be UV treated, so that it doesn't go brittle and break in sunlight. Up to 1 mm thick so that light cannot pass through.

September 2017, I introduce Homeacres small garden of 25sqm/270sqft, no dig and compost-mulched.
There are limiting factors such as paving slabs in the soil, the neighbour's shrubs with moisture-sucking roots, slugs in the edges, and shade from buildings.
See how I cleared this area of weeds and made beds in November 2012 https://www.charlesdowding.co.uk/learn/small-garden/
The next video (2) will show the harvests of December 2017, and my planting plan for 2018.
I aim to harvest a diverse range of veg, say three daily from late April to November. The thumbnail is a February harvest 2018.
I am writing this April 2018: since filming and over the winter months we have enjoyed harvests of fennel, radicchio, spinach, salad leaves of many kinds, kale, leek and parsley.
Filmed at Homeacres by Edward Dowding, edited by him in Edinburgh, see http://edowdingfilms.onfabrik.com/portfolio
