Afterwards, I install the remaining valve tappets and tappet covers, along with the oil pump and cylinder head studs. As usual on this project, I run into a bunch of unexpected roadblocks including a worn keyway on a timing gear and trouble finding new injector precups for the head. These sorts of things continue to make the Farmall MD restoration a challenging project.

Afterwards, Hilarie and I move a batch of broiler chicks out to pasture. Then we have to deal with the Dexter cattle, who have grazed into over mature forage and need to be moved to a new field. Finally, I check in on Red the sow and her new piglets.

I have found composted manure to be great for our fields, and because of our composting system we have never needed to apply chemical fertilizers to maintain our grass yields.

I get out the Farmall 504 tractor and my backup international 990 haybine. The haybine has been sitting for a few years so I check it out, greasing and oiling it. Then it's down to the field to start mowing for the Dexter cattle with the haybine, using a method called cut wilt graze, where paddocks are mowed daily before the cattle graze the cut grass. Nothing goes according to plan: the haybine breaks down and thunderstorms roll in.
