Today I reviewed the NooElec L-Band patch antenna which is supplied in the form of a Bundle, which includes cables, connectors and a Low Noise Amp (LNA) and filter combination known as the Sawbird IO.

With this kit you can receive signals from the Inmarsat satellites.
I performed a review of the bundle decoding various Classic Aero signals in the 1.545 GHz band.

I used the NooElec SMArtee Software Defined Radio for the tests, and tuned the SDR using SDR#.

This long weekend I wanted to experiment with my Airspy Mini SDR and some software called rdio-scanner.

rdio-scanner creates a customizable web interface from which to control your software defined radio. Using it, you can turn a computer, phone or tablet into something that closely resembles a hardware scanner!

Trunk Recorder is the software that decodes the unencrypted P25 signals and records them to disk. Here is it demonstrated working on a large Simulcast (LSM) site.

rdio-scanner reads the audio files. Through the rdio-scanner interface, you are basically choosing which audio files to play.

Have a look at the video, and comment below if you use Trunk Recorder or rdio-scanner with your SDR. Or tell me about your solution!

**You don't need an Airspy product, all this software will also work with the infamous RTL-SDR v3 and NooElec SMART dongles as well 😃 **

-- If you find this video helpful, feel free to buy me a coffee --

You don't need much to decode pager traffic - just a frugal Software Defined Radio and some free software. In this video I show how to decode the pages, particularly those used by Emergency Services (Fire & Ambulance / EMT).

These pages are often displayed on Mobile Data Terminals (MDTs).
I used a generic dongle in this video, but I recommend the frequency stabilised units (with TCXO) below :

NooElec SMART : https://amzn.to/2YKlh6p

RTL-SDR v3 : https://amzn.to/2NIGGGZ

I used an MCX to BNC adapter for the antenna : https://amzn.to/3omy3W7

However if you are using an RTL-SDR or NooElec SMART you'll need one of the SMA connectors, such as those in the kits below.
RTL-SDR pigtail kit : https://amzn.to/3F5Stsf

It took me AGES to find the setting that enables the Zone heading to remain on. That's because the item that needs to be changed is called "Digital Contact". Who would have guessed that?

This video shows how to disable the Digital Contact display in order to leave the Zone display on all the time.

I used the Alinco CPS v1.12 found on the download tab of the link below. My radio runs firmware v 1.13c.

Have you found any oddly named settings on your Alinco? Are there any MD5 videos you would like to see? Comment below, and thanks for watching 😃

We wanted to find the location of a DMR trunked network in order to determine the user. The Kraken amazed us by how quickly it was able to locate the transmitter site in this first test. We were so impressed, we decided to go out and search for a P25 transmitter site in Test 2.

This 5 channel coherent SDR is simply amazing.
Highly recommended for any DF enthusiasts, or as additional equipment for your Amateur Radio club.

NOTE : I was provided a free KrakenSDR in order to test it. No other payment was made for this review. I'm just showing the fun I had with this incredible software defined radio platform.

In this video I pair up one of my trusty RTL-SDR v3 dongles with DSDPlus Fastlane edition.

I explain the various information that is displayed on the multiple DSDPlus windows, and give examples of how to monitor various talkgroups. Given that most scanners are unable to monitor Simulcast (LSM) systems, this $50 union makes for informative and interesting decoding experiences.

There is a lot to a piece of software like DSDPlus, and this video certainly doesn't cover it all, but it will be enough to get you going. You can also pause at various sections to focus on certain windows for information that is being displayed.

The 2020 SDR Guide has now become the 2021 SDR Guide as new videos are released going forward, but they are all contained in the same playlist at
https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe5ZKeM2hRBJ2G_Gvt1JnBxqtjHMMej3q

If you are wondering why I use the RTL-SDR v3 silver dongle in many of my videos, you can check out the budget Software Defined Radio shootout episode at https://youtu.be/FDwTGk6c2Qg or see the article at https://frugalradio.com/rtl-sdr-v3/

Obtaining the DSDPlus software is not a typical process. There is no shopping cart on the site, you basically make a PayPal payment and add an extra comment. Details are here : https://www.dsdplus.com/dsdplus-fast-lane-program/

For those who prefer using SDR# for their monitoring activities, the recently released Simple DMR plugin can get you listening to digital audio in under 5 minutes!

Visit https://frugalradio.com/simple-dmr for the plugin link.

Unfortunately Simple DMR does not show any trunking information such as timeslots, talkgroups, or network data. For that you would want to use something like DSDPlus (see Episode 7 of the 2020 SDR Guide at https://youtu.be/WbksL2wqKTw). However this plugin will get you listening to DMR audio fast.

For this video I used SDR Sharp version 1784, along with an RTL-SDR v3 software defined radio.

Enjoy, and as always, thanks for watching the Frugal Radio (FR) channel!

This video shows most of the kinds of messages you will receive if you set up an SDR radio to decode ACARS transmissions in the VHF air band.

I used the following 2 SDRs in the making of this video :
RTL-SDR v3 - https://amzn.to/2NIGGGZ
NooElec NESDR SMArt - https://amzn.to/2YKlh6p

To see a review of these 2 budget SDRs you can watch my Budget SDR Shootout at https://youtu.be/FDwTGk6c2Qg

Of course you can use any SDR that covers the VHF airband to decode ACARS transmissions.

The scanner I use most for airband is the Uniden Bearcat BCT15X which you can find at https://amzn.to/2RcalNE

Software used :
acarsdec - https://github.com/TLeconte/acarsdec
Black Cat ACARS - http://blackcatsystems.com/software/black_cat_acars_decoder.html
AcarSdeco2 - http://xdeco.org/

If you are new to the world of SDR, check out the 2020/2021 SDR Guide videos which will help you discover what your Software Defined Radio is capable of!

This New Year, I decided to try a LoG in the back yard.
The ground was covered in snow, and it was cold out, but I've wanted to try the KK5JY Loop on Ground antenna for a while now.

I already had some supplies at hand, and it only took about 30 minutes to construct.

I used a NooElec Balun 9:1 barebones (https://amzn.to/3dkjoUQ) as my transformer, although I would have preferred an enclosed version (https://amzn.to/35X1hjS).

My Software Defined Radio was the Airspy HF+ Discovery, and I also used the newly released SDR# v1834 that came out on New Year's Day 2022.

I used an RTL-SDR AM Reject filter to cut out the horrific MW interference in my area. You can get these from https://amzn.to/3qG0Owu

Other items used are listed below :

Speaker Wire - https://amzn.to/3eKOq8U
500ft RG6 cable - https://amzn.to/3EPqN9H
100m RG6 (UK) - https://amzn.to/3HkXhdE
25 pack F connectors - https://amzn.to/3mScNpD
F female to SMA male adapters - https://amzn.to/32WOBeE

Overall it was a fun Amateur Radio antenna project, and the ground loop did in fact work as you can see in this short video!

In response to a user comment about the Airspy YouLoop performance on LF & VLF, I performed a real world test on a stormy night in Europe. Plenty of submarine communications were taking place!

Previous Airspy YouLoop review can be found at https://youtu.be/Qzj_IX6gh1c
Please note that the YouLoop requires an HDR receiver such as the Airspy HF+ Discovery Software Defined Radio used in this video.

Stations were ID'd using several websites, including
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_low_frequency
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_VLF-transmitters
https://www.sigidwiki.com/wiki/Category:VLF
https://www.smeter.net/stations/vlf-stations.php
and a cached page from MWList (https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:uhHKke0aqMUJ:https://www.mwlist.org/vlf.php+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk&client=firefox-b-d)

I'm not overly familiar with what VLF and low LF signals should be receivable in Europe, so I'll leave it for you to comment on whether you think I was getting good performance from the YouLoop or not.

I look forward to your comments 😃

Thanks for watching the Frugal Radio (FR) channel!
