The Chinese SKS, AKA the Type 56 "Semi" Carbine is an iconic participant of conflicts in Vietnam, and a significantly armed the Chinese PLA.

The Accuracy International AE Mk I is a Law Enforcement version of the famed Arctic Warfare with changes to the chassis, threaded barrel, and removed "winterized" features... It is, however a "dead accurate" rifle built with the ruggedness to withstand the the harshest conditions with the same action as the AW.

Perhaps it's outward appearance of the classic AI green chassis/stock that resembles the original L96A1 or the later L115A3 that really stays in your memory; or perhaps it's from playing CounterStrike 1.6 and using the AWP to 360 no-scope; or even perhaps it's because you like to smoke noobs in PUBG with the AWM.

Regardless, the AI classic precision rifles are on a class of its own with premium, barrels, a bomb proof, slick action and chassis design. If weight and money were of no concern, the AI is typically a top contender for government contracts for a good reason.

The FR F1 is one of the least understood sniper variants in the U.S. due to it's rarity, but the rifle has been the champion for French soldiers using it on overseas and domestic missions. Notably, the GIGN rescued a school bus of 31 children in 1976 in a daring hostage rescue at Loyada, on the Somalian border.

This rifle was the basis of which the "synchronized sniper" doctrine was developed upon, and the GIGN executed a synchronized sniper mission, knocking out 4 terrorists who were on the school bus at once.

Learn how the French developed the FR F1 from a modified MAS 36 receiver with it's distinctive rear locking lugs, side elevation adjustment APX scopes and centrally aligned bipods.

Range week and the rifle qualification are the cornerstone of any Soldier or Marine's indoctrination.

This is vital to train service members to proficiently operate their main weapon system, but more importantly to have the confidence in engaging an enemy at distance with the same rifle that they will eat, sleep, carry, and grow comfortable with.

INDOCTRINATION is the key word here. It is extremely valuable for a military commander to have a force believing that they can neutralize targets well outside of a weapon system's capabilities; remember close hits still suppress an enemy for a friendly unit's maneuver... but what happens when this indoctrination goes into the civilian world, where it has less useful application? How relevant is the indoctrination and subsequent qualification process?

None of this is to suggest that the accomplishment of expert qualification or the ability to connect on targets at 500 yards with iron sights is something to scoff at. These are extremely relevant proficiency standards. But to reiterate, everything must be kept in context as we continue to explore the effectiveness and capabilities of the various firearms and cartridges we test on this show.

YES WE KNOW THE USMC USES THE SCORING SYSTEM hits on the paper in white = 2 points leading to 5 points if you hit in black. The 500y portion is scored 10 shots in 10 minutes for 50 points of the 250 points overall. Which means if you only hit white for all the 500y shots, technically you can still make "expert" (220/250) if you do well on the 200-300y portion.

What is your ideal load-out in a non-permissive environment in the Middle East? Henry prefers his AK103 with the new Primary Arms 2x ACSS GLx scope, due to it's low maintenance, high performance, flexibility, and capabilities to vampire local supplies. In fact, this setup harkens back to older Soviet setups that were used during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan with all new equipment... but how does it perform to 500 yards?

The AK103 is a 7.62x39 adaptation to the AK74M, featuring mostly AK74 parts with a cartridge conversion back to the older 7.62x39. The AK103 is one of the more successful line items in the Kalashnikov Concern offerings, and can be frequently seen worldwide. The system boasts lower recoil than the usual 7.62x39 AKM/ Type 56, and uses the same magazines, but also has a side-rail that comes standard and a folding 5.5mm trunnion stock.

The "Gordon Carbine" (SDOD Delta Colt 723/733) was made famous on the silver screen for the film Black Hawk Down... but the system was actually deployed in a similar configuration!

People have wondered what the short little Gothic Serpent/ Black Hawk Down era CAR15 can do? We put a little bit of our own spin on the deployment of the system, and we do think by sighting the rifle in at 200m / red dot and 400m / iron sights gives the rifle a much more complete coverage of the cartridge's capabilities. So, two things to consider:

Our Gordon Carbine 733 clone runs a 12.5in barrel, which has very comparable ballistic performance to 14.5 M4 carbines. The 12.5 does not bleed velocity nearly as bad as the 10.5 variety, and the increased dwell time helps the system function much more reliably as a whole.

Furthermore, the iron sight option to this carbine in coupled with the red dot function covers a lot of ground, as Henry demonstrates.

The Colt Model 723 and "Commando" Model 733 were transitional 80's-90's carbines that laid the groundwork for the development of what we see in general issue for the U.S. Military. This particular model was made famous by the scene from Black Hawk Down, when one of the two helicopter snipers (Master Sgt. Gary Gordon and Master Sgt. Randy Shugart) rescued a fallen comrade with no expected support in sight.

SFOD-D (Delta Force) operators were amongst the first to experiment with these Car15's that were a solution to the multipurpose-carbine to be used with the new Aimpoint sights and OPSINC suppressors.

We attempt to delve into the topic of the early Delta Force carbine, and find out exactly why they were so attached to this design; and the characteristics that Master Sgt. Gary Gordon's carbine makes it so attractive even for today's purposes.

The Mk12 SPR series of rifles were a cherished weapon for the special operations and USMC marksmen. Iconic for it's use of the OpsInc 12th model suppressor, deadly accuracy and extending the 5.56 caliber projectile to effective distances that previously were only considered 7.62 NATO territory.

The smaller caliber also affords the weapon system lower recoil and much faster follow-up shots. So what happens when you take a suppressed Mk12 to distance on speed? We find out.

The M16A2 was the "improvement" of the venerable M16A1 with direct input from the U.S. Marine Corps. It is no secret that Eugene Stoner criticized some of the modifications went directly against his original design philosophies.

One the main controversies was the M16A2 rear sight. Some consider it a waste of money and to have too much adjustment compared to the simple M16A1 two-position sight, and purely to accommodate the 500yard U.S. Marine K-D (known distance) range rifle qualifications.

We brought on Brad Simmons, a U.S. Marine infantryman who was in the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003, and subsequently in Fallujah of 2004 to talk about the effectiveness and use philosophy of the M16A2 during that era.

Brad talks about the combat use of the M16A2, the different tips and tricks that he and his teammates employed and we dive deep into the topic to discuss whether there was a deeper philosophy behind the M16A2 rear sight.

One of the key upgrade components to the Special Operations' SOPMOD M4 Block II upper was the "SOCOM profile" M4 barrel: a heavy barrel with M203 cuts.

It's been said in civilian circles that this heavy profile barrel has sub-MOA capabilities, creates a rifle that can substitute machine gun fire, and will hold tighter groups when the rifle is heated up.

Is this fact or rumor? (because we couldn't' find any type of military published documentation stating any of those benefits) Was it purely to mount a short M203 on?

We find out.

🏅Previous record holder - lowest round count for optic-ready service rifle

Sweden 🇸🇪 makes expensive and useful furniture... for rifles. The AK4 (Automatkarbin 4) is a 1:1 copy of the German H&K G3 with a longer stock. The AK4D, however, is the last iteration of the modernized version of the AK4 / G3 system that Sweden uses.

The AK4C and AK4D systems are most notable for using a Spuhr upgraded stock that redirects the recoil impulse, shortens the length of pull and increases the shooter's sight height for optics use.

Specifically the AK4D system is upgraded as a "stop-gap" measure before the Swedish Armed Forces find a new permanent 7.62x51 NATO caliber DMR. (Many speculate this to be something equivalent to the HK417/Scar17-20 type rifles)

At the end of the day, Swedish forces basically took aging 50-year-old G3 type rifles and re-outfitted them for general issue and marksman issue. The AK4C/D story is one of Swedish pragmatism by spending less on new rifles so that they could afford more useful items in their military like night vision or thermals.

The AK4d is not without fault. Many of them are issued with aging Hensoldt Z24 4x28mm scopes for their marksmen. So how would this old piece of tech perform with some of the latest modernization upgrades? We find out and also hear from Karl, the Swedish Army Marksman program instructor.

AK4C - the AK4B with Spuhr stock with Aimpoint

For nearly 50 years, the AK74 / AK74M family has served in the Russian military as a genera purpose rifle, and while the heart of the rifle has largely remained similar the exterior has received drastic change to adapt to modern combat.

Unlike the M16 series, the AK74's modernization is a unique blend of eastern and western philosophy. How did this come about? How do Western/US manufactured modernization kits differ form the Eastern/Russian kits?

We journey into the three main phases of modernization that turned the Afghan-era AKs74 into the Spetsnaz "Alpha" type AK74m that we know nowadays.

With further evolution with the AK Niner project, the rifle has now fully progressed with a Russian SAG (Sureshot Armament Group) Mk3 chassis, fully floating the front end with minimal heat contact, IR and white light capability, and an even smaller and lighter ACSS Holosun red dot / magnifier setup.

The AK Niner Mk1 project originated from the mid 2000's and published in 2018. Since then, the accessory market for Kalashnikov patterned rifles have flourished... so has the rifle.

The AK-Niner Mk 2 integrated a lighter MLOk rail to receive attachments but still could not use IR lasers without a zero shift, and also still relied on the side-rail to mount optics.

The AK Niner Mk3 can now fully integrate western lights, lasers, MLOK accessories and optics while significantly decreasing the affects of heat on operations.
