Stage 4: Burn some of your 90 second par time on a spinning pistol target so you're more stressed about actually spinning the 50 yard MGM spinner target with your rifle while prone on a roof top barricade. You'd better neutralize that pistol target quick becuase you need that time for that rifle spinner!

Par times have interesting psychological effects on shooters and are another way to instill stress inoculation.

This video also has our conclusions about this M4 vs AK74 match and an early review of the Hard Head Veterans FAST ballistic helmet we used throughout the day.

We both ran in Armored division as we recently received an excellent ballistic FAST helmet from Hard Head Veterans to test out. We plan to have a full review and discussion about that helmet by using it in a number a matches going forward.

Stage 3: This appears simple enough, move to multiple positions of cover and get two hits on each mini-IPSC steel plate at 50 yards while bringing the weight with you.

Even though I (Karl) have shot AR variants more than another other rifle in my shooting "career", I'd never bothered to even try using the large CQB aperture on a M4 style rifle. That turned out to be a big mistake.

First person shooters are not new, we've had them since Wolfenstein 3D. One of the earliest genres of computer "games" were flight simulators, some of which were very intensive in regards to realism and giving the player a real idea about the planes being modeled - games like Falcon 4.0, Rise of Flight, IL-46 and DCS World are fine examples. On their highest realism setting it can take hours just to learn how to take off in your virtual FW-190, never mind successfully identify and shoot down an enemy plane.

The first person shooter has also evolved with advancing technology making it also possible to provide combat simulation type experiences beyond just reticle shoot'em ups. Excellent examples of this niche genre are Red Orchestra 2, Rising Storm, the ARMA series, and to a lesser degree, Verdun.

Virtual Reality technology had a brief blip on the consumer market in the 1990's but failed. We're seeing a renaissance of a very next generation version of virtual reality with the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive, and with that, the very first true commercial VR combat sim - Onward.

In the real world, shooting is a skill, not a tactic, and tactics are more important than shooting. Communication, squad movement, covering fire, and more, are things that are hard to even practice on the square range. Onward VR provides a glance at what VR can do in this regard and paints a vivid picture of what's to come.

In Part 1 of this 2 part series we discuss the difference between a FPS and a simulator, provide a basic introduction on VR gear and walkthrough the weapons handling and manipulation on the training range while in Onward VR.

What do you think about side charging uppers? If you had to use one would you prefer non-reciprocating or reciprocating? The only non-reciprocating uppers I've seen can still use the normal bcgs whereas the reciprocating bcgs need a modified bcg and, possibly, a modified upper.

I know you guys are somewhat interested in the Leupold D-EVO, at least in concept, as you have mentioned in a video or two. Do you think the idea would be seen as less of a gimmick if the whole optic could be stacked in a footprint that was all inline with the barrel instead of swung over the side of the gun? Of course still allowing a red dot sight to be attached on top at a standard cowitness height, and having the kind of shared eyebox for the two sights. I really like the idea, but of course Leupold is the only one making such a product and at $1200+ it's a tough sell, especially when it adds that bulk out over the ejection port

Well, nothing besides the lack of BUIS, pencil barrels, a Holosun optic, chosing a 14.5" barrel for the carbine, chosing a 18" barrel for the rifle, using an expensive carbon fiber float tube, using an expensive charging handle and, of course, the lack of a forward assist.

The GWACS (previously CavArms MK2) lower is the best of breed polymer lower on the market and the only one we'd consider for this project.
