My raspberry pi journey started with the Ultimate Raspberry Pi build a couple of years ago. Since then, Linux and the Pi tutorial have remained regular features on the channel. Unfortunately, with high demand and uncertain availability, I may be saying goodbye to the Raspberry Pi, for my portable ham radio ops.

In this episode of the OH8STN ham radio, we are discussing replacing the raspberry pi 4, with the Microsoft Surface or some other tablet or laptop, as a portable ham radio computer for my Icom IC-705. Top of my list was a windows tablet or laptop like the Microsoft Surface. It would be used for WInlink, FT8, JS8Call, and other ham radio data modes which require capabilities, the Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 can't always provide. Let's take a look at the raspberry pi vs a windows tablet to see if we will be saying goodbye to the ultimate raspberry pi in the field, once and for all.

With ham radio suspended in Ukraine, we take a broader look at emergency survival radio preps & strategies for decentralized emergency communications. Disaster preparedness and prepping for a civilian emergency response should include group communications, tactical radio communications, your backup radios, strategies for radio monitoring & observation using an SDR (software defined radio), strategies for radio intelligence gathering, Data Comms like JS8Call, Winlink & VarAC, even meshtastic running on Lora hardware. Finally, and most often forgotten, is getting critical news and information with emergency shortwave radio broadcasts to the people. Our emergency communications plan should also cover HF, CB, VHF, UHF, business band and other bands taking advantage of the benefits, each one offers over the other.

Russias war in Ukraine as unfortunate as it is, has shown us the importance of our emergency communication preps. Normally we prepare for some sort of weather event. The conflict in Ukraine lets us with study the best doomsday strategies for the prepper interested in using comms for our ultimate survival under such conditions.

Hello Operators
Today we are solar powered with a portable winlink station on OH8STN Ham Radio.
In this mini-episode , Snapper and I are man portable with the Icom IC-705, Microsoft Surface Go2, Chameleon MPAS 2.0, PowerFilm 100 watt thin-film solar panel and 5-amp hour LiFePO4 battery to power the station. We are on a 17km/10.5 miles hike to field test our portable ham radio winlink station for off-grid communications. With an emphasis on ham radio data modes, this is a rapid deployment excursion. No radio camping, no fat bike. Just Snapper and I operating on foot.

The Icom IC-705 is an all mode HF, VHF, UHF, QRP+ portable radio with exceptional performance and efficiency.
The Chameleon MPAS is a portable HF + 6 Meters antenna which is quick and easy to deploy and can be configured into a variety of unique configurations. I'll be testing the antenna in a vertical configuration using an additional loading coil, mid way up the antenna, for 80 meter regional winlink connections.

The PowerFilm powered station shows us just how simple it is to deploy QRP or QRO stations to the field completely off.grid, yet maintain optimal regional communications without loud, heavy or difficult to deploy gasoline generators.

Short unedited Xiegu X6100 video review of the SSB capabilities, using the internal micriphone. I was operating QRP, SSB with PI4RS Radio Scouting club. the Xiegu x6100 SDR transceiver with the internal microphone, a diy LiFePO4 battery and a 60 watt PowerFilm solar panel. My antenna was an Off Center Fed Dipole from @Chameleon_Antenna which literally weighs nothing!

This QRP rig has been on on the bench testing for a while now. It is not perfect, but it is getting closer to being an excellent "budget friendly" QRP ham radio, with a few unexpected tricks up its sleeve.

Hello Operators
Today we are building a DIY LiFePO4 Battery for portable ham radio, radio preparedess, camping and/or emergency power that fits in your poket. This is a pocket sized 12 volt Lithium Iron Phosphate biuild. It is put together using a cheap battery spot welder.

This 12v battery pack might not be as "professional" as one from Will Prowse, but it is purpose built for a balance of weight, size, energy density and storage capacity. Augment your favorite QRP radios internal battery with this pocket sized power supply.

Parts list with all links and technical details are published on my blog: There's 26650 cells, BMS, 26650 cell holders, spotwelder, a 3d printed enclosure, desktop charger, and info on the solar charge controller.

Hello Operators.
There are times operating man-portable when efficiency and portability are of greater importance than riggedness. This lightweight and portable HF antenna is extremely efficient, weights nothing, and may become the primary antenna for an ultra portable option for a QRP field station. The antenna is the OCF 40 from Chameleon Antenna. The HF dipole is resonant on 40, 20 and 10 meters. It handles 50 watts SSB and 20 watts all other modes.
Join me as we test this off center fed dipole with the Xiegu X6100 running on solar power and Icom IC-705 running an NVIS winlink session on 40 meters.
