In this video, This Old House master electrician Heath Eastman helps a homeowner give her backyard space some charm and coziness with a simple lighting upgrade.

Backyard spaces can be an opportunity to put your personal style on display outdoors. But in many developments, backyards are relatively basic and need a bit of help. When a homeowner asked master electrician Heath Eastman about dressing up her deck with some outdoor string lights, he knew just what to do to brighten that backyard space.

Where to find it?
Heath uses exterior-rated string lights [https://homedepot.sjv.io/QyzY59], which can be found at any home center and simply need to be rated for outdoor use.

To hang the lights, Heath uses a universal mounting kit [https://homedepot.sjv.io/Gmobzn] which includes 4 powder-coated steel poles. Each pole extends to 10 feet tall. Heath uses a drill [https://homedepot.sjv.io/R50Wna] and exterior decking screws [https://homedepot.sjv.io/JzokE2] to secure the base of each pole to the 4 outer edges of the patio.

To hang the string lights: Heath uses a ladder [https://homedepot.sjv.io/WqJOmJ] to carefully hang the wires of the string lights to each metal anchor hook [https://homedepot.sjv.io/da3ym3]. Heath then secures the wires to the hooks using threaded links.

Heath mounts the smart switch inside by drilling two small holes to secure the bracket of the smart switch [https://homedepot.sjv.io/Gmobv6] in place.

All supplies used for this project can be found at most home centers.

In this video, This Old House landscaping contractor Jenn Nawada helps a homeowner design a garden that will work with their half-sun, half-shade yard perfectly, turning the homeowner’s backyard into a little oasis.

SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.

Jenn Nawada takes us on a house call to help a homeowner give new life to her light-challenged backyard. Jenn helps by building a drip edge that will help preserve the shed first. Then, she creates a sun and shade garden, using certain plants where the sun shines through and others in areas that are primarily shaded. The result is the backyard transformation that the homeowner was looking for.

Where to find it?
Jenn helps a homeowner install a drip edge around her shed and install a sun and shade garden with a Goshen stepping stone [https://www.originalgoshenstone.com/what-it-is] path.

To install the drip edge, Jenn uses a shovel [https://amzn.to/440Dhci] to excavate a trench on each side of the shed doors about 7-½’ long, 12” wide, and about 5-6 inches; deep. Next, she borders the inside of the trench with steel landscape edging [https://amzn.to/446hQqm] and lines the sides of the trench with a landscape fabric [https://amzn.to/3AB9kC6] that is cut to size. Finally, Jenn fills the trench with beach pebbles [https://amzn.to/3V9pfkF].

To prep the garden, pull and discard weeds with gardening gloves [https://amzn.to/44bxpNq]. Then, break up the grass with a grub hoe [https://amzn.to/3LCWKJa]. Rake [https://amzn.to/3Veaq0f] any remaining sod roots and discard.

Use a shovel to turn over the soil and incorporate compost [https://amzn.to/41L1nWZ].

Utilities in front of our homes aren’t always the most attractive lawn ornaments we could ask for. When a homeowner’s utility cover was on its last legs, he reached out to Nathan Gilbert for a new solution. Nathan’s plan is to build a new cover from weather-resistant materials and give that old gas meter a clean new look that also meets code.

Where to find it?
For building materials, Nathan uses 4x4” cedar posts [https://homedepot.sjv.io/WqK4BZ] and composite decking [https://homedepot.sjv.io/GmqnA9]. The cedar posts are rot-resistant. Composite decking is great against the elements and its fixed dimensions make it great to use as dimensional lumber.

To build the cover Nathan starts by measuring, marking, and cutting the 4x4” posts to
the correct height and width. He cuts 4 posts for the sides and 3 posts for the bottom.

To secure the frame together, Nathan uses exterior grade deck screws [https://homedepot.sjv.io/DK1Qja].

Next Nathan measures [https://homedepot.sjv.io/WqK4xZ], marks and cuts the composite decking with a miter saw [https://homedepot.sjv.io/MmjDn2]. For the edges, he miters the decking, so it looks more cohesive on the outside.

To secure the decking to the frame, he uses deck screws on the face of the composite.
He adds a wood glue [https://homedepot.sjv.io/KjPqLn] to the mitered edges for extra strength.

To add the house numbers, Nathan measures and marks the location, so it’s perfectly
centered on the front of the box. He then secures the house numbers to the front of the
box using the provided screws.

After placing the cover around the gas meter, add weights for extra support.

All supplies are available at your local home store. Special assistance provided by Tulsa Remote [https://tulsaremote.com/].

General contractor Tom Silva takes us on a road trip to help a homeowner patch holes in the floor left by the previous homeowner. With some of Tom's decades-old stock, the two set to work cutting and patching a piece into the floor. Then, once installed, Tom shows the homeowner how to finish the patch so it blends in perfectly.

Radiator systems require installers to drill holes through the floor. When it’s a finished wood floor, and the homeowner eventually removes the radiator, those holes become an eyesore. General contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner solve this exact problem in his new baby’s nursery, patching the floors with a “new” piece of wood milled to match the existing flooring.

Difficulty: ⅗
Cost: Under $40
Time: One day

Where to find it?
Tom Silva helps a homeowner patch holes in their wood floors left over from radiators previously removed.

Tom plans to cut straight across the two boards with holes to remove them, and then drop one board in to look like two.

A miter saw [https://amzn.to/3ALefR1] is used to rip the board to match the width of the existing floorboards. Then, a table saw [https://amzn.to/3LNfKVf] is used to cut the board to length. Adjusting the blade depth, Tom cuts in a shallow joint line, making sure the rip fence is 4-½” to the right of the blade.

An oscillating saw [https://amzn.to/3NxD62r] is used to cut a straight line across the old floor board. Then, a pry bar [https://amzn.to/3p036cH] and hammer [https://amzn.to/42kGylh] are used to gently pull up the old floor boards. Debris is then cleaned up with a HEPA vacuum [https://amzn.to/44jYAps].

Tom places the new board into place and face nails [https://homedepot.sjv.io/LXKM4Y] it secure using the original floors square cut nails. Finally, an orbital sander [https://amzn.to/3ngmeTf] is used to sand the board smooth. For the finishing touch, a coat of oil-based polyurethane [https://homedepot.sjv.io/AWPv27] is applied to the floor with a paintbrush [https://amzn.to/3VnYdpU].

Landscape contractor Jenn Nawada helps a homeowner bring new life to her backyard guest entrance. Understanding that this space receives full sun, Jenn and the homeowner pick out some sun-loving plants that will bloom throughout the year. The two plant the new flowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees in the ground, and finish it up with a thick layer of mulch to transform the gateway.

Full-sun gardens can be light, fun, and have plenty of texture to offer throughout the year. But, they do take careful planning and plant choice considerations. When a homeowner decided to dress up her backyard gate with a full-sun garden, landscape contractor Jenn Nawada answered the call.

Difficulty: ⅖
Full-Sun Garden Plants

Choosing the right plants for a full-sun garden is key. Sun-loving plants will thrive while those that are more sensitive to heat will suffer almost immediately. The following are some full-sun plants to consider in these spaces:

Ask This Old House welcomes landscape contractor, Lee Gilliam to the cast and shines a spotlight on his 30 years of landscaping experience.

It All Started 30 Years Ago
Lee’s story begins 30 years ago. Back then, he operated out of a Toyota station wagon with just a lawnmower. He started the business while working on an assembly line, and he would get out of work in the afternoon and cut grass until around 9 PM each night. Over the course of 12 years, his business continued to grow until he was able to leave assembly work and work for himself full-time.

Lee Loves a Well-Maintained Lawn
Lee believes that a well-maintained lawn should not have any weeds in it, including stubborn plants like creeping Charlie and clover. He knows that a healthy lawn will grow so tight and thick that weeds can’t take hold. These lawns should have nice, dark green coloring—a sure sign of good health from Lee’s standpoint.

Hardscaping is His Thing, As Well
Lee doesn’t just love plants. He also loves hardscape materials. He’s a big fan of cobblestone edging, bluestone slabs, and weathered brick. He’s able to make garden beds, walkways, and other yard accents from these materials, providing plenty of visual interest.

A Well-Maintained Yard is Like a Fresh Haircut
When it comes to keeping a yard looking sharp, Lee has a plan. He likes to edge the garden beds at least twice a month to keep them looking crisp. Paired with a fresh-cut lawn, edged beds remind Lee of a new haircut.

His Crew is Like Family
Some of Lee’s employees have been with him for 20 years. They know what he likes and what his customers look for. Lee looks at these great people not just as employees but also as family.

He Believes You Can Do It
“Don’t give up,” is Lee’s biggest piece of advice. He believes that anyone can start their own business, but they have to stick with it for 5 years and reinvest in the business. He says there will be some discouraging days but not to let those days get you down. It’s a great profession and Lee feels it’s very rewarding.

Difficulty: ⅗
Cost: About $175
Time: About 5 hours

"We could use just a bit more counter space,” I said to my husband as I stood and looked around our kitchen. He laughed. After all, I had just spent months completely remodeling the space—building new upper cabinets, demoing a pantry wall, replacing the backsplash, installing flooring and lighting, and then having it painted when the work was done.

But while I was a bit tired from the nonstop projects, I knew the space was calling for a kitchen cart. So, I headed back into my workshop.

The result? A 25-by-50-inch butcher-block work surface atop a sturdy open-frame cart with tapered legs, a slatted shelf, hooks and a towel bar for hanging storage, and heavy-duty locking casters so it’s easy to glide out of the way should a smidge more space be needed for, say, a family dance party. At just under $200 for materials, this last kitchen project was well worth the extra effort. Read on to see how you can make one of your own.

Richard Trethewey helps a family deal with a cold addition. The family’s living room was added to the home in the 1980s and only has electric heat to condition it, and would like to use the fireplace in the adjoining room to spread some heat. Once Richard explains how inefficient a fireplace can be, he solves the family’s issue by having a wood-burning insert installed in the fireplace.

A homeowner’s living room needs supplemental heat, and plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey knows how to use a fireplace in an adjoining room. The problem is that fireplaces themselves are unbelievably inefficient. While they do emit some radiant heat, they cause a draft that pulls the heated air from the rest of the home and sends it up the chimney.

A better option is a wood-burning fireplace insert, which emits radiant heat and forced hot air, while also preventing warm air from the home escaping. Richard helps the homeowner come up with this solution and then finds a local pro for the installation.

Where to find it?
Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner troubleshoot how to supplement heating their home by using their fireplace. Richard explains fireplace convection, why it’s not an efficient source to heat the home, and why a wood burning insert is a great option for the homeowner. After, a team of installers install a stainless-steel liner and wood burning fireplace insert.

Richard does a demonstration showcasing how fireplace convection works.

The fireplace insert works by:
• Pulling air from the room into the lower chamber.
• Air circulates behind the firebox, picking up the heat. From there, a fan pushes the heated air back out of the front facing vent above the fire.
• The heat from the central burner also emits more radiant heat from the face of the insert, back into the room.
• Combustion fumes and smoke vent out of the top of the insert through an installed chimney liner.
• The insert works as a seal, so even if there’s no fire burning, there are no drafts.

Expert assistance was provided by The Chimney Chap [https://www.thechimneychap.com/]. The fireplace insert was manufactured by Vermont Casting [https://www.vermontcastings.com/].

Host Kevin O'Connor meets back at the shop with landscape contractor Jenn Nawada and her guest, fellow landscaper Lee Gilliam. Lee shows Kevin and Jenn some of the tools landscapers use most often, from pruners to lawnmowers. After that, Lee shows Kevin and Jenn how to maintain those tools so they work well and provide the best results.

Outdoor tools need love too. Host Kevin O’Connor and landscape contractor Jenn Nawada discuss outdoor tool maintenance with fellow landscape professional Lee Gilliam. Lee teaches them about some of the most common tools landscapers use, as well as how to maintain some of the larger power tools.

Where to find it?
Jenn introduces landscape contractor Lee Gilliam, and together they discuss different landscape
tools and how to maintain them for Spring.

Lee explains the main differences between gas-powered and electric-powered tools.

Gas powered tools: Are usually capable of working at a higher capacity for longer periods of time.
Better for larger properties require more maintenance to ensure the combustion engine performs at a high level, which includes changing the oil, checking spark plugs, changing the filters,..etc.

Electric powered tools: Usually require little maintenance have less capacity and require frequent battery recharging. Better fit for properties 1 acre or less.

For electric lawn mowers, the biggest maintenance includes sharpening the mower blades. To do this, Lee will:

Flip the machine on its side.

Remove the fastener that holds the blades in place using a screwdriver.

While wearing gloves (to avoid cutting himself), Lee will remove the blades

Using a file, run the blade in the same direction until the blade is sharp again

Slide the blades back into position and secure them to the lawnmower using the screwdriver
For string trimmer maintenance (Lee will use a gas powered string trimmer in this demonstration):

String trimmer tune up kits can be found in most home centers and they provide all the materials necessary for most basic maintenance on the string trimmer.

The most typical maintenance on a string trimmer includes:
• Changing the gas and air filters
• Restringing the trimmer–remove the head on the trimmer by twisting it counter-clockwise. Pull the wire out until it’s at the right length. If there’s tension or nothing comes out, it will need a new line.
For blower maintenance (Lee will show a gas powered and electric powered blower for this
demonstration):

• It’s less of a maintenance thing, but Lee recommends checking the decibel rating of your blower. Many towns are starting to ban blowers based on decibel levels, sometimes as low as 65 decibels. If yours is too loud, it may need to be replaced.

In this video, This Old House general contractor Tom Silva helps a homeowner by hand-carving a new rope baluster for their ornate Queen Anne home’s staircase.

Ornate staircases—particularly those in older homes—can be difficult to repair. Their ornate and custom touches are difficult to replicate, and it often takes a true craftsperson to replicate balusters and moldings. General contractor Tom Silva is just the person for the job, helping one Queen Anne homeowner replace a baluster with a hand-carved replica.

Where to find it?

Tom helps a homeowner missing original spiral detailed spindles from their staircase by hand-turning
replicas on a lathe [https://amzn.to/3MwR3eK].

Then he traces the profile of the original baluster onto a manilla folder [https://amzn.to/3oubdhF] with a scribing compass [https://amzn.to/3WqqMUd]. Tom then cuts out the profile of the baluster with scissors [https://amzn.to/3Mtkz5a].

Tom measures and marks [https://amzn.to/42T5qBb] the center portion of the baluster in equal increments.

He uses the parting tool [https://amzn.to/3ODr347] for low points of the spindle details.

Then, Tom uses the spindle gouge [https://amzn.to/3ODr347] to carve into tighter areas.

He uses the skew chisel [https://amzn.to/3ODr347] to carve into the larger areas of the spindle and to round out the edges.

Tom uses a hand saw [https://amzn.to/3WB1K4Q] to cut slots in the spindle following the traced out lines from the string [https://amzn.to/3OAgpel].

He uses a rasp [https://amzn.to/3ODslMv] to file down the edges of the saw cuts until each section has a rounded edge.

Tom then applies a wax-free gel shellac [https://amzn.to/3WvNlqh] to the spindles to match the existing ones.

Mark McCullough takes us on a house call to help a homeowner extend her front walkway to her driveway. After Mark sources some matching materials, the two work together to branch off the existing walkway, creating an additional path leading to the driveway. They lay cobblestones, spread pea gravel, and lay large bluestone pavers to complete the look.

Walkways that stretch from the front door to the sidewalk are great. But to make them truly functional and keep folks from walking across the front yard, they need to connect to the driveway as well. Mason Mark McCullough helps a homeowner take an existing walkway consisting of centuries-old cobblestones and connect it to her driveway using carefully-sourced materials. Here’s how it’s done.

Difficulty: ⅖
Cost: Roughly $30 per linear foot
Time: A weekend

Where to find it?
Mark extends a pea stone walkway to make a connection between an existing walkway and
driveway.

To get started Mark uses landscape string [https://amzn.to/3TttxT2] and stakes [https://amzn.to/3yOV1ci] to outline the desired width of the walkway. This ensures the walkway is square from the house. After digging down about 4 inches with shovels [https://amzn.to/3yRX0MY], lay down landscaping fabric [https://amzn.to/3lzFv0R]. Landscape fabric is setting a nice bed for the pea stone gravel [https://bit.ly/3TrEe8P] and is a sustainable way to keep weeds away. Once the walkway is prepped, dig a trench bed to lay the cobblestone [https://bit.ly/3FCYNt1]. The trench should be 2-3 inches wider than the intended border. (cobblestone around 9”x5”). Instead of doing a complete dry lay, Mark opts to use a small amount of mortar [https://bit.ly/3LC9Nut] to give the cobblestone some reinforcement.

Laying Cobblestone Edging and Pea Stone:

Place the first cobblestone into the mortar.

Tap it down with a rubber mallet to set it into the mortar, then add or remove mortar as needed so the top of the stone is level.

Add the next four cobblestones, using the string line as a level. Tap the side of the cobblestones with the rubber mallet not worrying about the gaps between each stone. (They will be filled with pea stone)

When the first five cobblestones are laid, lay a level across them, and adjust the stones to achieve level edging.

Install the rest of the cobblestones to the opposite end of the trench; check for level after placing every five cobblestones.

Spread out roughly 3 inches of pea stone over the landscaping fabric.

Mark suggests using a rake to smooth over any dips in the gravel.

After the gravel is poured and leveled, Mark suggests using a hand tamper to help compress the gravel down tighter.

Last step is to drop the bluestone into the pea stone.

In this video, This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey installs a reserve tank so a homeowner can finally fill their tub with hot water for a relaxing bath.

SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.

Plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner solve a hot water shortage problem. Thinking that they had an on-demand water heater, the homeowner couldn't understand why the water from the tub spout would cool before the tub would fill. Richard discovers it's a combi unit with a water tank and helps the homeowner solve the problem by installing a reserve tank.

Difficulty: ⅖
Time: One day
Cost: Around $2,000 including the tank

Where to find it?
Richard Trethewey helps a homeowner understand how different flow rates in water fixtures could be the culprit behind a bathtub that turns cold after only being halfway filled.

Richard discovers the tankless water heater [https://www.thisoldhouse.com/plumbing/21019184/read-this-before-you-buy-a-tankless-water-heater] can’t keep up with the tub spout’s flow rate. He suggests installing a separate 80-gallon reserve tank [https://homedepot.sjv.io/6ekgLK] that can easily handle the 60-gallon soaker tub. With the assistance of a plumbing specialist, an ideal location for the new unit is identified. Richard suggests an area near the existing tank that isn’t prone to freezing.

After disconnecting the electrical supply, connect the tankless inlet to a bronze or stainless-steel
circulator. On the tank, tankless outlet, use both thread tape [https://homedepot.sjv.io/m542qe] and pipe dope [https://homedepot.sjv.io/daK9DM] and connect a 3/4 inch tube adapter [https://homedepot.sjv.io/75XJ6A] and connect this to the hot tankless coil outlet on the boiler. Use both thread tape and pipe dope to connect a 3/4 inch NPT brass tee [https://homedepot.sjv.io/eKnAWr]. In the run of the brass tee, install a 3/4 inch NPT brass Ts [https://homedepot.sjv.io/AWgEN1] long element for hot water heaters, as required by local codes. In the bottom of the tee vertically down, install a 3/4 inch NPT x 3/4 inch tube adapter. Then install two 3/4 inch sweat street 90-degree elbows [https://homedepot.sjv.io/3ekdNB]. Fill the storage tank by opening the cold water shut-off valve. Make certain any drain valves are completely closed. Purge air from the system by opening a hot water outlet at a fixture in a kitchen or bathroom.

When water flows freely from the outlet, the system is purged. Set the storage tank to the desired
temperature. Boiler high limit should be set at least 20 degrees F higher than the storage tank temperature setting.

Water heater products were manufactured by Heat Transfer Products (HTP) [https://htproducts.com/] and Jomar Distributors [https://www.jomardist.com/].

Kevin O'Connor learns about gutter downspouts from general contractor Tom Silva. Tom teaches Kevin what he needs to know, from the different types of elbows and outlets and a few tips on how to get that water away from the home.

Gutters collect the water from our roofing systems, and they shuttle it away from the house to protect our foundations. But, to get that water from the gutter to the ground requires a downspout. There are a lot of different downspouts and fittings to consider to move that rainwater far enough away from the home.

Where to find it?
Tom Silva explains the options available for gutter downspouts to divert water away from a home’s foundation.

Tom recommends sealing any drilled holes with butyl caulking because it seals well to aluminum.

Tom explains that gutter elbows are the best way to divert gutters and they come in a variety of options to accommodate the needs of any homeowner. A few examples of gutter elbows include:

A-style elbows [https://homedepot.sjv.io/75aLEy]: bend front to back. Typically a good choice for getting the downspout to connect smoothly from the gutter outlet to the side of the house.

B-style elbows [https://homedepot.sjv.io/DKyAYn]: bend side to side. Typically a good choice to divert water away from the house towards the side yard instead of either the front or the back.

Flexible elbows [https://homedepot.sjv.io/5g5mWL]: bend in any direction and can help in unique situations. However, because of all the ridges in them, they’re more likely to get clogged than fixed elbows.

Nathan Gilbert goes on a road trip to Texas where he helps a homeowner organize her garage. After the homeowner explains that she has six kids’ worth of toys in her garage space, Nathan decides to set up a track system with adjustable storage. The pair get to work attaching brackets for shelving, bikes, ladders, and tools, helping to organize the space for its best use.

When toys and tolls start piling up in the shed or garage, getting organized can feel overwhelming. Rather than letting that mess keep you from using the space to its full potential, get organized with a smart adjustable storage system. Carpenter Nathan Gilbert shows us exactly how it’s done on this house call, while he helps a busy mom of six clean up her shed.

Difficulty: ⅕
Cost: Around $100 for one storage rack set
Time: A day

Where to find it?
Nathan installs a storage track system [https://amzn.to/3Jyw8Xe] in a shed for a Texas homeowner. Nathan explains there are many organizational track systems available on the market. He suggests considering what you’re storing and how often you’ll need to access the items being stored before deciding on a system.

Locate the studs and mark them. Measure out the distance between each stud using a stud finder to determine where your other rails will need to be. Measure from the center of one stud to the center of the next one. Most studs are going to be between 16 to 24 inches on center apart.

Measure how high you want your railing to be. To make sure that your railing is going to be straight, use a level and mark off where each railing will start and end. And mark pilot holes

Mount the rails using a drill and the provided screws. Drill pilot holes and screw steel rail onto the wall. The rails already have pre-drilled mounting holes.

Give the rails a gentle tug to make sure they’re set in sturdy. Then attach rail cover over the steel rail

Hang hooks and attachments on the rails

In this video, This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey teams up with a local plumber to install a new stove and a vented microwave to exhaust the fumes.

SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.

Richard Trethewey makes a house call to Philadelphia. There, he helps a homeowner upgrade her oven as well as install a new microwave with ventilation. Partnering with a local licensed plumber, the pair remove the old units, modify some plumbing and ductwork, and install new units that the family can enjoy for years to come.

Ventilation is always important in a kitchen. It prevents unnecessary humidity from building and can help eject smoke if that casserole gets away from you. But, when it comes to gas appliances, a properly-exhausting hood or microwave is critical for keeping potentially harmful contaminants out of the house. Here's how to install a vented microwave.

Difficulty: ⅗
Cost: Around $40 not including the microwave
Time: 4 hours

Where to find it?
Richard heads to Philadelphia to help a homeowner with a leaking gas oven. Richard teams up
with local plumbing expert, Kelly Ireland [https://matriarchybuild.com/pro/kelly-ireland/]. Together, they install a new gas oven and built-in vented microwave [https://amzn.to/41aKhRE].

To install the microwave, Richard and Kelly drill in the mounting brackets into the wall using an
electric drill [https://amzn.to/3Mxh2o7]. Richard uses a hole saw [https://amzn.to/3nVkoqJ] to cut an access hole to run the plug into the receptacle in the overhead cabinet. He also cuts an access hole for the ventilation duct [https://amzn.to/3mi7DpU] to come through the overhead cabinet using an orbiting sawzall [https://amzn.to/3nPq2un]. Richard offsets the exhaust by installing a double elbow [https://amzn.to/3GrZyWb] ventilation pipe. Kelly uses an auger drill bit [https://amzn.to/3KNdCfG] to drill the pilot hole to the exterior. After, Kelly uses a hole saw to cut an access hole to the exterior of the house. Richard cuts the exterior access hole with the hole saw and installs the exterior exhaust vent [https://amzn.to/40Xmipi].

To install the gas stove, Kelly has to allow space for the gas connection. She partially modifies
the wall by cutting into it with a sawzall behind the connector. To ensure the stove is secure,
Richard and Kelly install an anti-tip bracket [https://amzn.to/3ZWzeut]. Once secured, Richard and Kelly check the level [https://amzn.to/40TC84z].

In this video, This Old House painting expert Mauro Henrique helps a homeowner refresh and protect their foundation with a new coat of paint meant for masonry surfaces.

SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.

Mauro Henrique helps a homeowner paint her foundation. Mauro and the homeowner set to work clearing the foundation, covering the ground, and giving the foundation a fresh look with self-priming masonry paint. The result is a beautiful, durable finish that the homeowner can enjoy for years to come.

We all know foundations are important but we don’t always treat them like they are. We join painting expert Mauro Henrique on a house call as he helps a homeowner revitalize and protect their foundation with a few coats of masonry paint.

Difficulty: 1/5
Cost: Roughly $30 per gallon*
Time: 1 Day

*Each gallon covers around 400 square feet with one coat, but coverage may vary

Where to find it?
Mauro helps a homeowner add to their homes curb appeal by repainting a cracked and
chipping paint foundation.

Mauro removes the old chipping paint by scraping with a 5-in-1 painters tool [https://amzn.to/40ls1oD], moving parallel up against the peeling paints edges. To remove any remaining dust or debris, Mauro scrubs the foundation with medium to stiff nylon scrub brushes [https://amzn.to/40Hc9Nd]. To paint the foundation, Mauro uses a medium grey primer [https://bit.ly/40wOajO] and masonry paint [https://thd.co/40BrcYC] and applies 2 coats. To cut-in the edges Mauro uses 4” stiff nylon cutting brushes [https://amzn.to/40lOEJN]. To apply the rest of the paint, Mauro uses 3/8” to 1” thick paint rollers [https://amzn.to/3KbqprQ]—because the foundation has a rougher textured finish, 1” rollers will work perfect to get full coverage over the uneven surface. This masonry paint [https://thd.co/40BrcYC] requires 4 hours of drying time between coats.

In this video, This Old House general contractor Tom Silva and carpenter Nathan Gilbert work together to build a bar top out of a slab of live-edge red oak from Nathan’s Christmas tree farm.

SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: http://bit.ly/SubscribeThisOldHouse.

Nathan Gilbert and Tom Silva get to work turning it into the ideal bar top. First, they take a wire wheel to the live edge to remove any punk and loose wood. Then, they set to work with a belt sander to smooth it over. After that, Tom uses one of his homemade jigs to route the slab flat while Nathan builds the legs. Finally, the two assemble the table, give it an oil treatment, and polish it.

Where to find it?
Nathan and Tom work together to build bar top from the lumber Nathan milled from his property.

Tom uses a wirewheel attachment [https://amzn.to/3p54uLh] to chip away the wood fibers on the live edge. Afterwards, Tom uses a belt sander [https://amzn.to/3NdcKAU] to clean the edges up.

For the top, Nathan uses an electric hand planer [https://amzn.to/3PgBUkS] to get the underside of the table roughly flat. Tom takes a few passes with the belt sander to finish it up.

To fill any remaining cracks in the wood, Tom uses a 5 minute epoxy [https://amzn.to/3CxH6cy] and mixes in some saw dust leftover from the belt sander to create a matching woodfiller.

While the epoxy cures on the top, Tom and Nathan begin leveling the bottom using a router sled [https://amzn.to/3JgqbPy] and heavy duty 3 horsepower router [https://amzn.to/42GwYcc] and straight cutting bit [https://amzn.to/3X8kysc]. (You could also use a planer bit.)

Nathan assembles the base by threading the pipes together with a wrench. Then Tom and Nathan secure the table legs to the holes in the bottom of the bar top with a drill [https://amzn.to/43FPt1v].

Finally, Nathan applies an oil/wax combination finish [https://amzn.to/461cQo5] and buffs it in with a rotary polisher [https://amzn.to/3qG2Ekp].

Nathan received expert assistance from Mike at Peregrine White Sawmill [https://www.facebook.com/Mikesrusticwoodshop/].

Mark McCullough teaches host Kevin O'Connor how to clean stains from stone surfaces like limestone and bluestone. After explaining some of the older methods, Mark shows Kevin the procedure for lifting stains from these stones with muriatic acid to bring them back to life.

Stone is one of the toughest landscaping materials, but the fall and winter can be hard on it. Leaves that deteriorate on porous stone surfaces can leave stains, and mildew can grow in damp areas. The good news is those stains don’t have to be permanent, and mason Mark McCullough shows host Kevin O’Connor just what to do about them.

Difficulty: ⅕
Cost: Around $50
Time: One day

How To Clean Hardscape

For smaller stones and bricks that can be removed from the landscape, prepare two tubs: one with water and the other with the stone cleaning solution, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Pre-wet the stone. Place the stone in the water tub and dip the brush in water to wet and scrub the stone. For hardscape materials that are large or stuck in place, use a garden hose to wet the entire surface of the stone. This will prevent the cleaning solution from damaging the stone while it lifts the stains.

Apply the cleaning solution to the stone. For smaller stones, place them in the other tub and apply the solution to the surface with the stiff bristled brush. For large stones, dip the brush into the washing tub and apply the solution directly to the stone. Allow the solution to react with the stains for a minute so it can lift them from the stone’s surface. Then, use a clean brush and fresh water to wash the cleaning solution away. Heavy-scrubbing is not necessary.

Repeat the process if the stains aren’t completely gone.

Where to find it?
Mark demonstrates techniques for cleaning up driveways and walkways after the winter. Although,
common household items like baking soda and vinegar can handle some hardscape stains, Mark
recommends using a generic masonry detergent [https://homedepot.sjv.io/MmAMNJ], with very low levels of muriatic acid, and a utility scrub brush [https://amzn.to/3NOIcYr]. Follow the instructions listed on the container to properly dilute any masonry detergent.

There are also masonry cleaners available made to target specific issues such as rust and efflorescence.

Mark says to saturate the entire area with a water hose [https://amzn.to/3VpgoLH] before applying your cleaning product of choice. This will prevent burning once the cleaning product is applied. Using a utility scrub brush gently scrub, focusing on the heavily soiled stains. Rinse and repeat until desired results are achieved.
