Let’s face it; there is so much to learn to become a journeyman electrician, that that amount of knowledge needed can be a daunting task to grasp. To be a great electrician, you must start soaking in that knowledge early on in your career AND continue to learn the entire time you are working in the trades. So, upon entering the trades, this learning starts day one. It may not feel like it, but it’s happening. For the first several months, a green apprentice (or helper) will be expected to be HELPFUL but not necessarily feel IMPACTFUL, and you should learn to be OK with that! You will be expected to do the mundane tasks of cleaning, organizing, and bringing parts/tools to those electricians above you. Part of the reason is because those tasks still need to be done, but the other reason is to learn. There are tons and tons of electrical materials/tools, and an electrician will need to know what those materials/tools are. So, by being asked to go find, restock, or deliver those materials/tools you get the repetitions in by searching for them and handling them.
You may also be asked to do many seemingly mundane tasks like doing nothing but putting the three wires on a receptacle, but not being allowed to screw it into the box. By doing an entire house of installing 3 wires on a receptacle, after several houses, you will become proficient at the task. At some point, your journeyman will recognize your proficiency, and will take the next step at letting you put those receptacles into the box and properly install the cover plate. Its all learning and repetitions! Even something as simple as sweeping up or cleaning. While this seems like something so easy to understand, you are actually learning attention to detail as well as learning how different journeymen want those types of tasks done, as each journeyman is different! Trust me, what works for one may NOT be the way another one wants it done!! You will undoubtedly be the one whom crawls in the attics or under houses. Almost all our work as electricians is hidden from view (with the exception of where the electricity will be utilized like receptacles, light fixtures, panels, etc.) and you will need to know how to get from point A to point B. in addition, veteran electricians have been in so many attics and under so many houses, that we no longer want to get in those spaces! Enter the apprentice!!

Before we get into 4-point saddle bending, let’s take a moment to talk about aluminum conduit. Today’s sponsor- Penn Aluminum Conduit & EMT- makes some of the best aluminum conduit on the market. But why choose aluminum EMT over steel EMT? Well, it’s considerably lighter therefore it takes less labor to install and reduces wear and tear on your field staff hauling conduit around. Next, it’s much easier to bend than steel, again, making it less strenuous for your staff to install and using less labor. It’s also cheaper than steel currently, so it helps on the bottom line. Penn Aluminum has even engineered a coating for the inside of the conduit called Blue Lightning that helps with wire pulling and eliminates the snagging most often associated with aluminum conduit. Well worth it to try!
Whereas a 3-point saddle is meant for going over/around a smaller (probably round) obstruction, a 4-point saddle is meant for going over/around a larger obstruction. In essence, a 4-point saddle is 2 opposing offsets in the height of the obstruction, with a length of the obstruction in the middle of them.
The first step in the process is to measure the distance TO the obstruction and the height of the obstruction. Make a mark on your conduit using the distance to the obstruction. For this example, we are using 30-degree bends so a 2x multiplier comes into play. So, the second step is to make a mark of the offset height. Come back toward the end of the pipe and make a mark at 2x the obstruction height. Third, come AWAY from the end you’ve been measuring from and mark the conduit with the LENGTH of the obstruction. And lastly, add a final mark at 2x the obstruction height from your 3rd mark. Something to keep in mind is that you will be bending these in two sets- one two, and three four.
On to bending! Put the conduit into the bender at the first mark you made. Face the shoe TOWARDS marks 3 & 4 and the arrow of the bender on mark #1. Bend the conduit to 30 degrees. Without removing the conduit from the bender shoe, flip the bender over so it’s in the air. Slide the conduit down so the arrow is lined up with mark #2 and bend to 30 degrees. It’s important here to make sure you don’t dogleg your bends- so before bending sight down the conduit and line them up just as you would do with any offset. We are halfway there! Take the conduit out of the shoe and reinsert it at mark #3 with the shoe facing towards the bends you just made. Again, sight down the conduit to ensure all the bends are in line with one another. Bend to 30 degrees. Lastly, without removing conduit from the bender shoe, slide the conduit down to mark #4. Again, line everything up and then bend to 30 degrees. DONE!

A combination circuit is simply a circuit that has properties of both series circuits and parallel circuits within it. And, remembering that trying to figure out values for Voltage, Amperage, Resistance, and Power each require different formulas depending on what type of circuit it is. So, the easiest way to calculate values for these in a Combination Circuit is to simply start adding all the groupings of parallel circuits resistances together (this will need to be done a few times depending on how many there are) until we are left with a simple series circuit! Let’s review the rules. Voltage- in a series circuit voltage is dropped across each resistance while in a parallel circuit it’s constant. Current- in a series circuit current is constant but is proportional to the resistance in a parallel circuit. Resistance- in a series circuit resistance is the sum of all the resistances while in a parallel circuit it is the inverse. The formula for wattage in a series circuit Pt=I squared x Rt and in a parallel circuit its P=E squared/Rt. Let’s do one. Say we have a 100v power source and a combination circuit of 7 loads with the following resistances- R1-1, R2-2, R3-3, R4-4, R5-4, R6-3, R7-2. R6 & R7 are in parallel with each other, R4 & R5 are in parallel with each other, and those 4 are in parallel with R3. We will add R4 & R5, R6 & R7, and then add those together and then add it to R3. Since each set has only 2 resistances, we can use the product over sum method. Adding R4 & R5 we wind up with 1.7 ohms. Adding R6 & R7 we end up with 1.2 ohms and adding those together we have 2.9 ohms. Now we can add R3 and R4567 and have an end result of 1.18 ohms! Now we have 3 loads in series with one another and can complete our calculations! The total resistance of our circuit is the sum of all the resistances- 1 + 1.18 + 3= 5.18 ohms. The total amperage of our circuit is the voltage divided by the total resistance- 100/5.18 ohms or 19.3 amps. Voltage is dropped across each load and is equal to the source voltage. The formula is amperage multiplied by the resistance = voltage. R1- 19.3 x 1= 19.3v. R2- 19.3 x 1.18= 22.8v. R3- 19.3 x 3= 57.9v. Add those together and we have 100v or our source voltage! Lastly, we have the power to work out. Amperage x the voltage of each load = the power consumption of each and we would add those 3 values to get our total circuit power. P1- 19.3 x 19.3= 372.5w. P2- 19.3 x 22.8= 440w. P3- 19.3 x 57.9= 1117.5w. And our total power for the entire circuit is the additive of these. 372.5w+440w+1117.5W=1930w.

So, what are controls? In essence, controls are a way to electrically turn something on and off. Maybe a light switch? It controls a fixture/fixtures. What about multiple lighting circuits needing to be controlled by a single flip of one switch? Well we would use a multipole contactor and some type of switch turning that contactor on and off. Motors are another thing we can control. Again, enter the contactor and some type of switch that tells that contactor when to turn on and off.
So, there are two basic types of control components. The first one is the equipment that handles the normal power circuit for what you are wanting to turn on/off (lighting, motors, etc.). For that we typically use a relay or contactor. A relay is much smaller and capable of much less amperage than a contactor. Contactors are usually much larger, can carry more amperage, but can control less items. Contactors even have auxiliary contact points that can be added to suit additional needs. Say when you turn a motor on, you want a light to come on letting everyone know that the motor is running. Simply add an auxiliary contact to the contactor, use the NO contact point (NO-normally open= like it is sitting on the shelf, the contact points are open. NC-normally closed= sitting on shelf, the contact points are closed), and when the contactor closes and the motor begins to turn, the light comes on.
The other type of control component is something that interacts with the items being controlled- something that controls the controller. A simple switch falls in here. Flip the switch, something comes on. Flip it the other way, something goes off. A timer is another. It will allow the contact points to close and current to flow for a set amount of time, then it opens and current ceases to flow. A start/stop button is a great example of this. You want the motor to come on press the start button (usually wired on the NO contacts). You want the motor to stop just press the stop button (wired using the NC contacts- so it’s a failsafe). A limit switch is another way we can interact with a process.

When it comes to finding a buried receptacle, there are several ways to go about it. However, there are a few ways that should NOT be used. For instance, do NOT take a hammer or the handle of your ¾” bender and go to beating on the new drywall until you find it! This not only infuriates the GC and the drywall sub but will definitely land you with a large back charge to fix the damage. Along the same lines is cutting several holes in the drywall where you THINK it is. This would be for the same back charge reason or leave you with having to patch/paint the drywall yourself (most of us electricians are not very good at fixing the damage, just creating it!).
The first thing that should be done is to do your detective work. Find out which receptacles/devices in the string ARE working and which are NOT working. This should narrow down your search and leave you with the last receptacle, the wire left before being buried and the next in line- so now you know where you should be searching roughly. If you have access to drawings, this will also help narrow things down a bit, so you aren’t looking everywhere. A low voltage toner can be used, but only if it’s a single layer of drywall. More than that and it won’t be able to sense through it. A toner works by hooking a tone generator to one end of the wire and using the receiver to find the other end. A borescope is also handy in this situation as it has a camera/light on a flexible lead that you can insert into the wall and actually SEE what is obstructing the installation. The only limit here is the length of the flexible end and the fact that you cannot traverse into the next stud bay.
So, once you narrow down where you THINK the box/wire is at (from the detective portion), the next step is to poke through the drywall with something super small to find the actual box. Take a piece of bare #12 solid wire (or strip the insulation off an insulated piece) and cut a sharp angle on one end. Poke through the drywall. If it goes in easily and about 3” deep, you know you have missed. Move horizontally about an inch and a half either left or right and try again. You are looking for it to have a little resistance but be a bit spongy. You can also listen for either a plastic sound (for residential installations) or a metallic clink (for commercial installations with metal boxes). Something to keep in mind is that boxes are generally mounted right next to the stud. This may help in locating the box.
Once you have found the box, insert your drywall saw into the drywall and make a small hole to peer in or place your finger in to feel the wires. When you are confident you have found it, cut horizontally until you reach both sides of the box. Repeat for the vertical portion of the cuts. You may have to use your drywall knife to trim the drywall a bit for your plaster ring if using metal boxes. Now, install your receptacle as normal!

There are many types of new technologies that are available to us. You can use Tome to generate PowerPoints. Quill Bot is another type of electrical technology that you can use to summarize, rephrase, or paraphrase text. Dream is a program used to generate drawings. And even AutoGPT that will allow you to use AI to do things for you! Chat GPT is a program that uses AI technology to answer questions that you ask in like you were having a conversation with someone! But is it accurate?
Dustin asked ChatGPT something simple- “What is Electricity”? It came back with a rather lengthy answer about it being a secondary form of energy resulting from the existence and flow of electric charge which is typically carried by electrons. It further broke it down into static electricity and current electricity. So, the answer was correct when asked a rather high-altitude type of question and expanded on just a basic answer to give you quite a bit of information. Pretty sweet! But what will ChatGPT do when asked a very specific type of electrical question?
Dustin moved on and asked ChatGPT to “State 250.66 from the 2023 NEC”. It did not answer the question even though article 250.66 does in fact exist in the 2023 NEC. The reason that it would not answer the question is that the program won’t answer current questions as its knowledge is still limited to 2021 data. The question was rephrased to “State 250.66 from the 2020 NEC”. But it summarized the article and didn’t state it as requested. Still pretty great but didn’t do EXACTLY what it was asked to do! A pretty cool function of this AI however is that it will put into layman’s terms something you ask it. So, if you were having a rough time understanding that particular article of the code, you could ask it to put into terms that you could understand, and it would probably help you wrap your head around it!
Something to watch out for is that for the above question, it summarized the article but did not cite the code like it was asked. When Dustin told the AI this and asked it to cite it, the AI misquoted the code article and referenced article 250.66a. Point being here is that while the technology is super powerful and has access to a TON of data and information, always check and reference it yourself! While a great tool to ASSIST you in developing discussions or research articles, you should always check the answers it gives for accuracy! We are human and are capable of making mistakes, but so is AI!
Dustin did ask a quite specific and pointed question- “If you were to utilize electricity to improve humanity and our electrical consumption, how would you use electricity in a way that we are not currently thinking about it being used”? Seems like a really great question that requires quite a lot of information to answer and maybe even a human type of touch as you would imagine it has to THINK about an answer!
