I’ve had these two Sol-Ark 12Ks sitting in my powerhouse for three years doing nothing, so I decided to put them to work. In this project, I’m pulling solar power from my mother-in-law’s 15K system nearly a thousand feet away and sending it up to my powerhouse through AC coupling. This setup also lets us run two different battery banks and start building our own microgrid. We’ll go over how the dual 12Ks share energy and how this connection ties two systems together to create a small family microgrid.

I’ve been running the Upstart Power UpGen NXG fuel cell backup power system for almost two months now, using readily available propane as the fuel source. This on-demand energy appliance uses solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology to quietly convert fuel into clean DC power for my battery bank.

It kicks on around 70–75% state of charge and shuts off near 90%, producing about 1.5 kW for roughly three hours each cycle. It’s tied in with my Sol-Ark 18K and Helios batteries using a two-wire start and monitored through the Upstart app. Silent, low-maintenance, and about eight times more fuel-efficient than a generator — a reliable backup power solution for off-grid and hybrid systems.

Installed a fuel shut off so that once the truck is running on gasoline I can shut the fuel off and then open the valve for the woodgas and adjust the air-mixture valve. This might be like learning to play the "The Mighty Wurlitzer" from with inside the cab but that is half the fun of trying to make this old chevy run off of an oak tree!

A variation of the "Slapshot" deep well cylinder from Hydromissions. The Slapshot allows you to manually pump well water at depths far beyond suction methods that are limited to roughly 1 atmosphere of pressure or 14.7psi x 2.31 ft/psi ~ 33 ft.
