I have decided to create a new video series calling "Building a Bug Out Bag" that will show my process of redesigning my current Bug Out Bag (BOB) / 72-hour emergency backpack.

I'll be honest. My current B.O.B. absolutely sucks. It is extremely heavy, is completely unorganized, is missing key items, and is an embarrassing existence. I won't even show it to you guys.

I am planning on having my new B.O.B. be highly organized and functional. I plan on having all items stored in specific compartments, which I will be covering in the video series one by one. I plan on creating a R&D (research and development) video for each compartment, and then creating a finalized compartment video that shows what I decided on.

I am planning on using two main sources of inspiration in the creation of my new B.O.B. The first is Ultralight backpackers, as well as experienced "Thru-Hikers" (Ex: Erik The Black). This will help me achieve the goal I have of making a bag that is a lot lighter than my current one. The second inspiration are backpackers who carry lots of "Capabilities/Functionality", ala Nutnfancy. I am hoping to find a good balance between the two approaches.

I am really hoping that I can get a lot of quality input from the YouTube community, as I do not consider myself an expert in this field. I do consider myself an obsessive researcher, so whatever I come up with I know I will have studied diligently on. Hopefully, by the end of the series, I will have a new and improved Bug Out Bag that is highly functional, lightweight and is something I can be proud of for years to come. If this topic is uninteresting to you, or you find it stupid, please refrain from unnecessary or negative comments that will distract from the goal of this video series. I'm sure there are other YouTube videos that will better meet your entertainment needs.

I consider this project as family "Life Insurance". Yeah, I know I may never need to use this backpack. But I also may never need to use my Term Life Insurance either (in the near future at least). Just last night, I witnessed the Japan Earthquake/Tsunami unfold on CNN. I couldn't help but think, "I would sure want to have a good Bug Out Bag if I were over there right now". That horrific event is also helping me get motivation to prepare for an emergency, either nature or man made, to help me protect and care for my new family.

BUILDING A BUG OUT BAG: Research and Development - FOOD

This is part of my "Building a Bug Out Bag" video series that will document my process of redesigning my B.O.B. The bag will be divided into multiple "compartments", which will each have two related videos: an R&D (Research & Development) video and a finalized version video that shows what I eventually decided on for items in the particular compartment.

This video is for my "FOOD" compartment. I am currently in the early design process of this compartment. This Food Compartment would be included in my Bug Out Bag and will be labeled so another person would be able to easily identify it, if necessary (Ex: the wife). I am thinking in going in one of three different routes for food: MRE, Freeze Dried or Dehydrated (Grocery Store Variety).

Any input that you could provide to this FOOD compartment during its early design process would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It would be too much extra weight. But for an urban environment, I feel that having a basic set of tools for repair and emergency is essential.

Any input that you could provide to this TOOLS compartment during its early design process would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

In my video "A Woman's Perspective", I introduced "TacticalTemptress" to my YouTube channel and agreed to help her create a Bug Out Bag to be stored in her car. However, after doing the initial research for this project I decided that it would be better for me to start looking at her EDC (Every Day Carry) system BEFORE starting to create her a BOB, since these items should ideally compliment each other.

In this video I make a surprise visit to TacticalTemptress's place to see what items she carries in her current EDC bag, otherwise known as her "purse". After seeing her contents, I am now planning on refining her purse items with more tactical items and better organization. After that is finished, I will feel more comfortable designing her BOB, knowing that at the very least she will have a good EDC system that could be used in case of an emergency.

Please feel free to leave comments and offer suggestions to this project!

URBAN EDC BACKPACK (Version 2.0):
http://goo.gl/6LGQrt

This is my current Every Day Carry (EDC) bag. It is used in an Urban setting, so there are several items that are not included because I felt were more suited for a Rural setting. It also does not contain a Gun, Knife or Multi-Tool those are all included with my "on my person" EDC. The backpack is a Maxpedition Pygmy Falcon-II and the total weight of the EDC is 15.2 pounds (including full water bottle).

I am not a law enforcement officer, military or self proclaimed outdoor survival expert. I am just a white collar family guy who likes to be prepared for most situations. I did do A LOT of research before purchasing all of the items included in this video.

Please leave constructive comments. I'm always looking for ways to improve my Urban EDC. It is a constant work in progress. Thanks!

BUILDING A BUG OUT BAG: Research and Development - HYGIENE

This video is for my "HYGIENE" compartment. I am currently in the early design process of this compartment. This Hygiene Compartment would be included in my Bug Out Bag and will be labeled so another person would be able to easily identify it, if necessary (Ex: the wife). The items include:

Soap
Q-Tips
Razor ()
Shaving Cream ()
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Floss
Deodorant
Gold Bond
Eucerin (my nuckles get really dry)
Sunscreen
Insect Repellent
Hand Sanitizer
Nail Clippers (small)
Mini Scissors
Chap Stick
Wet Wipes
Mouthwash (*)
Toilet Paper
Mini Shovel
Collapsible Bucket
Travel Laundry Detergent (Tide)

All of these hygiene items probably are not that important compared to other areas (Ex: Food and Water) , but I figure there's 3 reasons for having them:

MORAL: My wife would become extremely depressed during a bug out scenario and these items would help her feel a little "normal".

CLEANLINESS: In a bug out scenario, being clean will help with diseases and avoid sickness.

PUBLIC IMPRESSION: I think people are treated better when they are clean, don't smell and look good. If we were in a bug out scenario, and ended up smelling like a homeless person, I would imagine that if we tried to get aid by another group we would be looked down upon, verses if we were semi clean and looked like a nice family trying to survive.

Any input that you could provide to this HYGIENE compartment during its early design process would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

BABY BOB: Bug Out Bag for a Baby

A lot of us have made ourselves a "BOB" (Bug Out Bag), but so far on YouTube there are not very many bug out bag's for babies. In this 2 part video series, you will see what I call the "Baby BOB". It contains all of the items that I think my baby (14 month old son) would need if there was ever an emergency that would require my family to leave our home (Ex: earthquake, tsunami, man made disaster, acts of terrorism, etc). As usual, I am always looking for ideas to improve my prepping items, so please provide me with comments that you feel would help with this specific topic.

The Baby BOB is a little bit different than an Adult BOB. Here are a few differences:

The baby is unable to carry their own gear

The baby has very specific items that they would require that are not necessarily able to be obtained from an Adult BOB (Ex: medicine, food, hygiene)

The baby does not need some common/core items that are included in an Adult BOB such as a tent, sleeping bag, water filter, camp stove, etc. They will NEED to rely on their parents to provide them with these key items.

The baby cannot communicate with anyone outside of your Bug Out Party, so baby identification will definitely need to be addressed (Ex: they will not be able to tell someone "My name is Joey and I am lost. My parents are John and Dane Doe and here's their cell phone number...").

I tried to address these and other topics in my Baby BOB to ensure that I will be prepared for my baby in case of an emergency. I hope to NEVER have to use this bag in an emergency, because that would be a AWFUL scenario for a parent of an infant to be in. At best, this Baby BOB could possibly be used as an emergency diaper bag if your primary diaper bag was lost or forgotten. The items in this Baby BOB will need to be changed as the baby continues to grow and their preferences in food change.

Here is a list of ALL items included in this Baby BOB:

Pot Cozy: Construction & Testing

I am currently in the process of putting together the "Cooking" compartment for my new bug out bag (BOB). One of the items I would like to include, which I do not see with a lot of other bug out bags, is something carried by ultra-light backpackers called a "Pot Cozy". A pot cozy is a simple and elegant alternative to simmering that will dramatically save fuel and provides a convenient carrying case for your cook pot. It provides an insulating layer around your pot to help reduce heat loss during simmering.

In this video I follow some instructions available online (search Google) for constructing a pot cozy and then I test it out by cooking Mac & Cheese. This is my first attempt at making a pot cozy, so their is a little trial and error.

Please feel free to leave constructive comments regarding this topic.

This is a video of my Urban Altoids Survival Tin that I carry every day. I show a comparison of 2 survival tins, one that is better suited for a Rural or Wilderness environment and the one that I carry that is beneficial for city living. I live in the Seattle area, where I am always within a 1 mile radius of a Starbucks, so having fishing wire or a fire steel on me every day is not necessary.

Yes, this Urban Altoids Survival Tin would not do me much good if I can lost in the Amazon Jungle. I'd probably be a goner (although I do have enough wilderness survival equipment in my EDC backpack). However, for my day to day life in the city, this EDC Altoids Tin gets used often enough to be carried daily.

If I ever decide to go on a family vacation into a rural/wilderness setting, I will leave the Urban Survival Tin at home and will carry a Rural Survival Tin that will better meet the needs in that sort of environment.

I'd love to hear your comments. I am constantly trying to improve my systems. Thanks!

(Research & Development Video)

This video shows the Money / Barter Items Compartment for my bug out bag redesign project. In an emergency, I won't be able to rely on debit/credit cards for purchasing goods and services. I will need to have cash, and plenty of it. However, there may be an emergency scenario where the US dollar collapses, in which I will want to have a few items on me that have value in a currency free society.

Introduction: BUG OUT LIBRARY

All of the gear and survival items that we "preppers" have been stockpiling are good to have, but the main thing we need is "Knowledge". Since I am not a survival expert, someone with a military background, or have any experience in a "real life" emergency/survival scenario, I am going to need to have as much knowledge and information as possible in a bug out scenario that will help ensure the safety of myself and my family.

Unfortunately, I cannot just bring my entire bookshelf filled with survival books, how to manuals, emergency preparedness instructions and more. It's just too big and too heavy. That lead me to wanting to have an E-Reader be utilized in my new bug out bag, which would provide me thousands of books, PDF's, manuals, maps and more that can be referenced in an emergency situation; all stored in a few ounces.

This video shows the plans and ideas that I am looking at that will hopefully help me achieve my goals in accumulating "knowledge". I really hope that you, the viewers, can help me refine this important system for my bug out bag. I have not seen any others on YouTube using this system (although I may have missed it), so this is unfamiliar territory for me. As always, I will be attempting to implement this system from an "Urban" perspective. I am really excited to see how this Bug Out Library materializes over the next several weeks.

Please feel free to leave constructive comments. If you are watching this video, then we are like minded individuals and hopefully we can all collaborate to refine our own personal prepping systems. Thanks!

(NOTE: Special thanks to "mrmonkeyman50" for collaborating with me over the past several weeks over this topic. In my "normal life", I do not have the opportunity about talking about these topics with my friends and family; they either don't care or just aren't knowledgeable in the subject. Thank you for always being willing to bounce ideas back and forth with me!)

BUILDING A BUG OUT BAG: Research and Development - URBAN TOOLS

(Note: Special thanks to "mrmonkeyman50" for all of his input on this compartment. His ideas and dialog were extremely helpful in creating the baseline of the Tools compartment. Thanks!"

This video is for my "URBAN TOOLS" compartment. I am currently in the early design process of this compartment. This Tools Compartment would be included in my Bug Out Bag and will be labeled so another person would be able to easily identify it, if necessary (Ex: the wife). The tools discussed in this video will not be for those looking at creating a BOB for a rural environment. It would be too much extra weight. But for an urban environment, I feel that having a basic set of tools for repair and emergency is essential.

Any input that you could provide to this TOOLS compartment during its early design process would be greatly appreciated.

BUILDING A BUG OUT BAG: Research and Development - WATER

This is part of my "Building a Bug Out Bag" video series that will document my process of redesigning my B.O.B. The bag will be divided into multiple "compartments", which will each have two related videos: an R&D (Research & Development) video and a finalized version video that shows what I eventually decided on for items in the particular compartment.

This video is for my "WATER" compartment. I am currently in the early design process of this compartment. This Water Compartment would be included in my Bug Out Bag and will be labeled so another person would be able to easily identify it, if necessary (Ex: the wife). My plan is to have 3 main areas in this compartment: storage, purification and miscellaneous (Ex: cleaning/repair).

Any input that you could provide to this WATER compartment during its early design process would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The following video series is a comparison of two similar backpacks; the Maxpedition Vulture II and the 5.11 Tactical Rush 72. Both are listed as 72-hour backpacks and have a similar design/style. I could not decide which backpack a to purchase based on my online research alone, so I decided to purchase both of them to decide for myself which one I felt was the best for my specific needs. I created multiple test points which are executed in this video series. My main purpose of selecting a backpack is for my 72-hour emergency backpack, otherwise known as a Bug Out Bag. Your purpose may vary from mine, but hopefully if you happened to find this video on YouTube, you had similar questions regarding the pro's and con's of each backpack. I hope this video helps you decide which backpack is best for your specific needs.

I apologize in advance for the length of this video series. If you would just like a summary of my test results and thoughts, please skip to PART 4 of this video series. Otherwise, please watch all parts to see all of the testing performed and my thoughts on each backpack.
